Dare/DooSeob Yoseob chewed his lip nervously. For the hundredth time, he peered at Hyunseung from the corner of his eye, trying to build up courage he knew he didn't have. The movie they'd come to see was almost over, and if he didn't try now, he would have lost this chance. Suddenly deciding his course of action, Yoseob leaned toward Hyunseung. Apparently not noticing Yoseob's movement, Hyunseung leaned in the opposite direction, picking his coat up from the empty seat to his left.
Yoseob cursed under his breath and turned his eyes to the cinema screen to see the credits rolling. Frowning to himself, he grabbed his own coat and stood to lead Hyunseung out of the theater.

There was that boy again, Jang Hyunseung, the one in the grade ahead of him, that neighbor he always saw around but had yet to actually meet face-to-face. Yoseob liked to watch him from time to time. He liked how delicate he looked sometimes, mostly when he was alone. But maybe delicate was the wrong word, he thought to himself. Fragile seemed more appropriate.
It was on one of these occasions, Hyunseung sitting on the grass just outside of his gate, leaning against the wall and looking a bit lost and a bit fragile, that Yoseob decided to finally meet him. They'd been neighbors for years, and yet had never even spoken. So Yoseob made his way over to the other boy and looked down at him. "Can I sit?"
Hyunseung had watched his approach, yet still seemed a little surprised when he spoke, as though he was suddenly woken from whatever daydream he'd been having. A smile broke out across his face. "Sure." He patted the ground beside himself.
Yoseob sat down beside the older boy. "I guess we don't need formal introductions." He found Hyunseung's smile to be infectious, and as he spoke, a smaile formed on his own lips as well.
"No, I guess not."
"What are you doing out here?"
Hyunseung pushed his hair out of his face and turned his eyes toward the sky, telling Yoseob, "Just thinking."

Hyunseung greeted Yoseob with a hug. Certainly, stranger things had happened in the time that Yoseob had known him, but this wasn't exactly how they normally greeted each other, and it made Yoseob blush furiously. If it had been anyone else, family, friends, he wouldn't have reacted like that. And he felt bad for it, because his embarrassment made him stiffen and try to pull away. Hyunseung didn't offer any resistance, but the smile on his face didn't seem to reach his eyes when Yoseob looked at him. So instead, Yoseob took his hand, his palm already a little clammy from nervousness. Then Hyunseung really smiled and Yoseob found himself, as usual, smiling in return.
As they went about their afternoon, just the two of them - it always seemed to be just the two of them - Hyunseung seemed to be lost in thought. Yoseob asked eventually, "What's on your mind?"
"Just wondering... People always ask if animals go to heaven. What about bugs and stuff? Like caterpillars? Or butterflies?"
Yoseob laughed softly. Hyunseung's wandering mind and insatiable curiosity about life made him particularly eandearing to Yoseob. They had made it back to their neighborhood, and Yoseob made his way over to the tree in front of Hyunseung's house. "Let's find one and ask him," Yoseob suggested, letting his eyes travel across the lower branches of the tree.
Hyunseung began searching as well, his expression showing his approval of their small game. Yoseob turned to look at him, not very concerned with finding a bug. Instead he let his eyes wander across Hyunseung, his face and neck and shoulders, in the same way he'd used when looking for the bug. He took in all the details he'd come to know over the past year.
Hyunseung caught him looking. "What's up?" he asked Yoseob with a slightly awkward tilt of his mouth.
They were standing very close, so close that Yoseob could have counted Hyunseung's eyelashes. That smile was still fixed to Hyunseung's lips, and Yoseob focused on those lips for a moment, a much longer moment than he should have because Hyunseung knew what he was looking at and it made the older boy pull him bottom lip into his mouth to bite it nervously. When his lip slid back out, it was a little reddened and a little damp and so much more alluring than Yoseob had thought it was before. Heart racing, he gathered his courage and began leaning in slowly.
"Oh, look!" Hyunseung exclaimed, pointing at a leaf on a low branch of the tree.
Yoseob followed his finger and saw a fat green caterpillar on the leaf.
"Hello," Hyunseung greeted it politely, laughter in his eyes. "Excuse us, but we'd like to know if you know a few things about heaven and bugs..."
Yoseob sighed to himself, sliding his arm around Hyunseung's waist and leaning comfortably against his side.

They had spoken almost daily after that day. Sometimes Yoseob would meet Hyunseung outside his gate, where the odler boy could generally be found simply sitting and thinking or possibly listening to music. Yoseob liked when he was listening to music because Hyunseung would always hand him an earbud and turn up the volume and they would sit without speaking, comfortable in their shared enjoyment. Yoseob discovered that Hyunseung had a talent for dancing, and Hyunseung seemed fascinated by Yoseob's passionate singing voice.
Sometimes Hyunseung would be waiting outside Yoseob's gate instead. Yoseob found that he liked those days the best; it made him feel like Hyunseung just couldn't wait to see him. He had never had a friend quite like Hyunseung - he doubted anyone was really quite like this unique boy - and from the day they officially met onward, just the sight of Hyunseung would raise Yoseob's heartrate and put butterflies in his stomach.
~~~~~~~~~~
"Come to my house after school," Yoseob instructed Hyunseung. He didn't normally order Hyunseung to do things, preferring to ask, but he was adamant about this now. No matter how he tried, he always seemed to screw this one thing up. But today he would change that.
With that same familiar smile, Hyunseung looped his arm through Yoseob's and replied, "Alright." They made their way to Yoseob's classroom, and Hyunseung seemed hesitant to leave. They made small talk, rehashing old topics and not sharing anything new but still finding a comfortable tone, until Yoseob had to insist Hyunseung leave, lest he be late for his class.
~~~~~~~~~~
Yoseob had his head in Hyunseung's lap, both ear buds in his ears. The grass was ticklish under his arms but he ignored it, his eyes closed as he simply enjoyed his time with Hyunseung and the selection of songs Hyunseung had chosen for him. He had turned the volume much lower than he typically did, wanting instead to hear the soft sounds of Hyunseung's breathing and his occasional humming. Hyunseung had never sung for Yoseob in the months they'd known each other, but Yoseob had secretly listened in on his humming often enough to know he had a fairly good voice.
Fingers threaded through his hair, toying with the strands, and he relaxed against the touch, feeling peaceful. Then Hyunseung began to speak so quietly Yoseob almost couldn't hear him past the music. He knew immediately that they were words he wasn't meant to hear.
"It's been almost a year since we met. I've become so much happier since then. You probably didn't even know you've been one of my only friends for a long time. I know you have lots of friends; I've seen you with them. I'm just one person in a group of people you divide your time between. But you make me feel special anyway. And maybe that's not a good thing. 'Cause I think I'm falling for you, and I don't want to do something that would screw up our friendship."
Yoseob did his best to keep his expression neutral, even as his heart beat uncontrollably in his chest.
~~~~~~~~~~
Hyunseung seemed a little stiff as he sat on Yoseob's couch, until Yoseob put his arms around him and pulled him closer. Then Hyunseung seemed to melt into the contours of Yoseob's embrace. Yoseob flipped through the channels on the television, not sure what to watch and suddenly nervous about what he'd told Hyunseung to come over here for. Still, he thought as he settled on some music program, even if he didn't go through with it, it was nice to have Hyunseung here, to curl up together like this so comfortably.
Time slipped by as they watched the show together in silence. Yoseob tried every few minutes to work up his courage, but again and again he found himself falling short of actually following through. He knew his parents would be coming home soon and that then, Hyunseung would leave and go back to his place.
"Why did you need me to come over here?"
Yoseob turned at the question. Hyunseung pulled back from the circle of his arms to look at him properly.
"You seemed like you really needed me to come over," Hyunseung added.
"Oh..." Yoseob felt his hands sweating. "Just... nothing really, just wanted to hang out I guess."
"Oh." Hyunseung looked a little disappointed. "I mean, this is fun, but you just sounded like..." He let his sentence trail away.
Looking at Hyunseung, Yoseob saw that fragility he had become so used to seeing before he'd gotten to know Hyunseung. He realized what it was then; it was Hyunseung's vulnerability, his loneliness showing through on his face. Seeing that expression and wanting to make it disappear gave Yoseob the courage to continue on with his plan.
"Well, there was something I wanted you to come over for." He pulled Hyunseung closer to himself again. "But you have to promise me you won't be upset, no matter what." He held out his pinkie.
Hyunseung considered him carefully for a moment before hesitantly locking their pinkies and touching their thumbs. "So, what is it?"
Yoseob was the first one to smile this time, and he watched as that smile spread to Hyunseung's face as well. Then he leaned in and pressed his lips to Hyunseung's firmly but briefly, leaving no question of his intentions but doing his best not to seem forceful either.
Hyunseung looked a little scared after the kiss, but mostly dazed. "Oh," he commented. But a moment later he seemed to come to himself, and he leaned toward the younger boy to return his kiss with one of his own. This time, Yoseob didn't worry about coming off as too forceful, their lips moving together in the same comfortable way the pair seemed to do just about everything else together.
