"--off campus next year!" Charles calls over his shoulder as he opens the door, laughing.

He turns, blinks, and if his grin doesn't get wider, his eyes are brighter.

"Well," he says, more quietly, "I could rethink the position."

Unslinging his backpack, he heads for a table, looking around in interest at new faces and old.

Hmmmm. I wonder what day it could be. What day could possibly have put Puck in such a generally amused frame of mind?

I wonder.

At any rate, Puck is lying on his back on one of the tables, eyeing the upside-down comings and goings of the patrons with lazy, amiable curiosity.

He is always willing to accept gifts of chocolate.

Puck has a scarf! A warm, fluffy scarf, made with love.

(Or so he assumes. You never can tell, with Havelock.)

Contrary to the impression that may be given by the icon, the scarf is varying shades of green, not varying shades of gray, and when Puck wears it he really does not look any more manic than usual.

Outside, there's a brief rush of wind.

A few minutes later, one of the tables has a blonde young man at it, reading. Occasionally he reads aloud, though under his breath; it sounds like poetry, from what can be heard.

Yesterday, Lyra Belacqua Silvertongue finished the sixth form at St Sophia's School, Oxford. Her overall marks were good but not stellar, although she earned a first in Rhetoric and another in her independent study of Alethiometry.
