Witches do not, as a rule, have any need or want of money. For the most part, they consider it simply an unneccesary complication. Clothing, food, shelter--all can be obtained without money. They buy nothing, sell nothing.
And yet, there are times when witch clans who render aid to humans are paid for their services. Such is the way of humans, and the witches--who rarely truly need any reward humans might give them, and often involve themselves for other reasons entirely--have become accustomed to simply taking whatever form of payment is offered, even if it comes in the form of money they do not need.
So when a witch clan is given money it does not need, what becomes of that money?
The answer to that question--and the Head Barman of Milliways' request that all tabs be paid in full--are the reason that Serafina Pekkala is currently seated in the parlor of one Dr. Lanselius of Trollesund, consul of the northern witches.
"How much do you need?"
"Not much. I have accumulated a slight debt that must be repaid."
"In cash?" Lanselius arches one eyebrow slightly, clearly curious as to how a witch has accumulated such a debt.
Serafina nods, calm and slightly amused. "The explanation for this is a bit strange, Doctor, but if you would like to hear it...?"
Lanselius shakes his head. "You owe me no explanations, Serafina Pekkala. The money entrusted with me belongs to your clan, after all. And occasions such as this, though rare, are what the fund is kept for, are they not?"
Serafina smiles at him, with a more than professional warmth. She has been queen of the Lake Enara tribe longer than Lanselius has been its consul, and for all his professionalism, he is more a friend than servant.
"They are indeed."
