Day 19 - Your favorite SPN song

I feel no hesitation in saying that Supernatural has the best selection of music in all of television, ever. Before the show, I wasn’t a huge fan of classic rock; I was more into alternative rock (though, neither then nor now, am I into utter shit like Kesha or Lady Gaga or whomever, nor any kind of rap. Just for the record) rather than the classic genre. But as soon as I saw the pilot, heard AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell” in conjunction with Sam and Dean blazing down the road, I knew classic rock would be the next playlist on my iPod.

That intro done, hmm. I’m going to have to give a few, here. In rough “most favorite” order, but I could-and have-listened to them each on repeat on multiple occasions.

- “Bad Company,” by Bad Company; played in “Scarecrow” when Meg is slitting the throat of the skeevy truck driver in order to communicate with her father. I also really like the Five Finger Death Punch version of this song, but the Bad Company version is, of course, the awesome precedent.

- “Don’t Fear the Reaper,” by Blue Öyster Cult; played in “Faith” when the Reaper is going after this runner chick and ultimately killing her in order to let Roy the preacher heal some old dude with an oxygen issue. A GREAT song, and insanely perfect for that scene.

- “Silent Lucidity,” by Queensrÿche; played at the end of “Heart,” when Sam had to kill Madison. I’d say the scene I now associate with this song makes it get me more than the song itself, to be perfectly honest. Whenever I hear the song and picture Sam crying (made worse by knowing it was Jared thinking of his dogs dying), picture Dean’s flinch at the gunshot, it just hurts. In a good way, but still.

- “Saturday Night Special,” by Lynyrd Skynyrd; played in “What Is and What Should Never Be,” both at the very beginning when Dean and Sam are discussing what to do with the djinn, and when Dean and Fake Sam are driving from Fake Mary’s house to where the djinn is. Immediately before is the hilarious scene of Fake Sam saying Dean’s still his brother and so he’ll help, which causes Dean to call him a bitch, to which Fake Sam replies obliviously, “Wh-What are you callin’ me a bitch for?” Dean: “You’re supposed to say jerk…” Fake Sam: “What?” Dean: “Never mind.” HEE.

- “Spirit in the Sky,” by Norman Greenbaum; played in “Good God, Y’all!” when Sam and Dean are walking from the broken road into the town in order to help Rufus with the town that’s infested by “demons.” This song is just amazing, I can’t say anything other, and I thought it was a great choice to play it as a scene overlay, but then show that it actually was playing on an idling car radio. Great usage and great song all around.

Don’t get me wrong, every song in Supernatural is great, whomever picks the song is a genius, and even though Supernatural’s budget is practically zero, I really hope to see some more fantastic songs in season six.
