Oh, Christ on a popsicle stick. How am I supposed to pick one quote? This is going to turn into a top two (by which I mean top two exchanges. Come on, I’m not that skilled as to come up with one single line as my favorite). I do feel extraordinarily accomplished, by the way, for narrowing it down that far.
Via “99 Problems”:
Cas: The Whore can only be killed by a true servant of Heaven.
Dean: Servant, like...?
Cas: Not you. Or me. Sam, of course, is an abomination.
Cas’s line was just so throwaway and yet managed to be angsty at the same time, and, in a word, awesome.
Via “The End”:
Samifer: Why would I want to destroy this stunning thing? Beautiful, in a trillion different ways. The last, perfect handiwork of God. You ever hear of the story of how I fell from grace?
Dean: Oh good God, you’re not gonna tell me a bedtime story, are you? My stomach’s almost out of bile.
Samifer: You know why God cast me down? Because I loved Him. More than anything. Then God created...you. The little...hairless apes. And then He asked all of us to bow down before you, to love you more than Him. And I said, “Father. I can’t.’ I said, “These human beings are flawed. Murderous.” And for that, God had Michael cast me into Hell. Now tell me: does the punishment fit the crime? Especially when I was right. Look what six billion of you have done to this thing. And how many of you blame me for it.
Dean: You’re not foolin’ me, you know that? With this sympathy-for-the-Devil crap. I know what you are.
Samifer: What am I?
Dean: You’re the same thing only bigger. The same brand of cockroach I’ve been squashing my whole life. An ugly, evil, belly-to-the-ground supernatural piece of crap. The only difference between them and you? Is the size of your ego.
Samifer: *creepily indulgent smile* I like you, Dean. I get what the other angels see in you. Goodbye. We’ll meet again soon.
Dean: You better kill me now!
Samifer: Pardon?
Dean: You better kill me now. Or I swear I will find a way to kill you. And I won’t stop!
Samifer: I know you won’t. I know you won’t say yes to Michael either. And I know you won’t kill Sam. Whatever you do, you will always end up...here. Whatever choices you make, whatever details you alter, we will always end up...here. I win. So I win.
Dean: You’re wrong.
Samifer: See you in five years, Dean.
This scene was just so well done it hurts. In fact, I’d say it’s in my top three favorite scenes of all time. I have to give credit where credit is due-while Jensen sold Dean’s abyssal desolation at what happened to the human race (that Single Manly Tear of Emo Doom was, as always, brilliantly executed), it’s Jared who really shined. I’ve mentioned before and I’ll mention again that I positively love when Jared plays evil. Doesn’t matter if it’s when Sam’s possessed by Meg, or by Lucifer, or when Sam’s merely hopped up on demon blood, or by any other means, I love it all. He’s just so creepy and so fantastic.
The way he was through and through not Sam in this scene was amazing to me. I saw absolutely none of Sam’s mannerisms or facial expressions or anything; it was all pure evil, despite the white, pressed suit, the combed hair, and the placid (barring the whole snapping future!Dean’s neck thing) movements. Jared was able to capture the Lucifer that Mark Pellegrino previously embodied, and added some of his own flair to it, which would be echoed later in “Swan Song.” To this day, no matter how many times I rewatch this episode, I continue to be astounded at his prowess. He truly is a fantastic actor-certainly doesn’t get nearly the praise he deserves-and this scene showcased that beautifully.
Again, Jensen put the cap on the greatness that is this scene, but Jared really wove it together. It could have been disastrous in less capable hands, but Jared pulled it off seamlessly. Bravo, boys!
