31 Days of Supernatural - Day 1, Favorite Character

Aug 02, 2010 00:57

Inanity and Supernatural get me through the day.  As such, here’s a meme I found via missanthropic who got it via adinarj, and thought I might as well partake.  Memes are clearly the unwritten step in the Stages of Grief.  Okay, I’ll stop depressing all y’all.

Day 1 - Your favorite character

Ask me a month and a half ago, I’d tell you Dean, without a doubt.  I’m not entirely sure when my focus (favoritism, if you want to be extreme) switched from Dean to Sam and Jensen to Jared, I really don’t.  Not that I hate the other or anything; only upon threat of death (or, apparently meme-age) would I relinquish bi-bro status and say that Sam has an edge over Dean.  Maybe it’s in response to the alarming amount of vitriol spewed at the poor guy, I don’t know.

In any event, I am most certainly a Samfan.  Sadly, the dude gets the short end of the stick time and time again.  I get the sense that Supernatural initially started out aiming for Sam to be the Tragic Hero, but through some series of events, that switched to Dean.  That’s not to say there aren’t Sam-centric episodes or that Sam doesn’t have an arc of his own or anything, I just feel like Sam more often than not gets shafted in favor of Dean.  I mean, the mere suggestion that Sam may have an important part to play (re: “Swan Song” and season six spoilers) gets fans in a rage and wanting Sam sent back to Hell.

But.  I love Sam.  A whole lot.  I think he’s extraordinarily misrepresented (by the writers, not by Jared, mind you) and misunderstood.  However awful Sam’s actions may have been in season four, for instance, they were done in good intentions.  Granted, they say that the road to Hell is paved with such things, but who are “they” anyway, and why do they get such cred?  Sam’s spent all his life trying to fit in, to adapt, and whether that means escaping to Stanford or decapitating Gordon’s head with razor wire, he tries his best, throws all his energies into doing what he thinks is right.  Can we find fault in that?  Well, apparently people can find fault in Sam if he breathes wrong.  I just think fans tend to prefer to see Sam as Gordon did (i.e. the Antichrist) and don’t give the guy a chance.  Or, rather, don’t look past his shortcomings.

I love Dean to pieces, but really, he has some huge flaws, too, you know.  Yet people often gloss over those in favor of saying this, that, or the other thing about Sam doing something wrong.  I think Sam is a great guy-and, evidently, the Man Upstairs seems to agree as well, considering Sam did go to Heaven-and though sometimes misguided, always has the best of intentions, and simply does everything he can to try and mold himself to the situation at hand.

So yes.  I’m a Samgirl.  Screw the haters.
