Feel and look a mess. Was up at the in-law's over the weekend, and spent most of yesterday travelling and somewhat inebriated. Cetainly did not need to open more wine when I got home. Not sure why my mom had never been to the opera before. She likes classical singing and likes theatre, so it seems like the perfect evening out for her. Rigoletto at the Royal Opera House was maybe the best performance I've been to, though probably not my favourite opera. The set and staging were fantastic. Normally my mother comes over in October when her golf course is closed for returfing, but she saw a very good deal with a travel club, so she decided to have an extra trip in late March. We've been in all week, so we were ready for another busy weekend. Wife decided to meet friends after work on Friday, so the mama and I went into town on a whim. Our three-year-old niece is staying with us. I feel like a man, coming home in a suit, taking the girls out for pizza, the child between us, swinging in our hands. Uncle and auntie in the city. I think we're good at it. But just uncle and auntie, no more.

Recently I have been getting The Fear of growing old.

• Early Christmas up north was fine, but man is that a different world. At least it was a nice dinner and good presents all around.
