Chapter 28
Booth glanced in the rearview mirror as he drove towards one of the local parks that Parker loved.
He was curious how much of his son's memory was really inside the child who was now acting like a toddler. This was going to be an experience for all of them but he liked to think he was prepared for anything.
Parker bounced in his car seat as he watched the familiar landmarks pass by. "Park!" he exclaimed happily. He loved going to the park with his daddy because he would push him high and kick the soccer ball around with him.
"Booth we have everything right, and we’re prepared?" She was a little unsure, not of what she needed or what Parker might need of her but of Booth. "I haven't been to the park much with you so what are we going to do?"
"Well I'm sure Parker is going to want to swing...that is always the first thing he wants to do." Booth said as he pulled into the parking lot. "We're prepared and if not we're only like 15 minutes away from home."
Parker was getting even more excited as he saw where they were. "Go pay...pay now!" he said struggling against his car seat.
Looking back at her son and watching his excitement hers grew as well. She leaned over and quickly kissed Booth on the cheek "ok Daddy let's go" she smiled as she got out of her side of the car and went to help him get all of their things out of the back.
Booth got Parker out of his seat and set him down on the ground. "Parker you carry this," he said putting the backpack that had his diapers and things on his back. He then helped Bones with the various other things.
Parker looked at the playground and back at his parents getting things ready. He wanted badly to go run and play right NOW. "Dad...Dad...pay now!" he whined.
She took the things he had from him "Go Booth take him. He's in a good mood, take him where he wants to go I'll set everything over there under that tree ok?" She had to push him toward Parker twice but he finally did.
"Pay!" Parker exclaimed as he dashed off towards the play ground with Booth behind him.
"Parker hold up," Booth laughed as he ran after his son towards the swings.
Parker was already on one of the swings kicking his legs giggling. "Push me!"
"Ohh you want me to push you?" Booth said with a smile as he went behind Parker and started to push him slowly. "Like this?"
"No No...fast!" Parker said with a roll of his eyes. "Fast daddy!"
Booth did just that.
She watch where they went and laughed to herself. She didn’t know who was having more fun Parker or Booth. Hank had been right they all needed this. She put down the blanket spread it out and put down Parker's ball and the basket of snacks they had brought. She ran off to join them. "Hey guys can I join you?" and she sat on the swing next to Booth starting to swing.
Parker looked at Bones and giggled. "Yeah mommy swing too." he said kicking his legs as he swung through the air.
"Oh does mommy need a push too?" Booth questioned moving over so he could push Bones as well.
"Oh yeah Mommy always needs your hands on her" she smiled at Booth and squealed as he gave her a big push. Her memory went back to a time when she had been to the park and her Father had pushed her on a swing. This time however it didn't bring any sadness. She wasn't over her feelings of loss or anger, she just realized Booth and Parker had become her family and they were all she needed.
Parker giggled even more when he saw Bones swinging with him. "Me higher." he said kicking his feet so he was a bit higher in the air then she was.
"You two are so cute," Booth said as he moved so he was in front of them so he could watch their happy smiles.
She couldn't resist as she watched Booth move just as he was in front of her she timed her jump and leaped toward him full of confidence he would catch her.
"Bones!" Booth exclaimed as she flew through the air and he caught her, both of them tumbling uninjured to the ground.
"Mommy flew!" Parker giggled as his swing slowed down and he hopped off running over to them and jumping on top of Bones who was on top of Booth. "Hi Hi," he laughed looking at both of them.
She grabbed Parker and rolled over to tickle him "yeah baby boy I did and Daddy caught me!" Looking at Booth full of love "just like he always has, just like he always will. Mommy loves you" she said reaching up kissing Parkers neck as he continued to giggle.
Parker giggled even more when Bones kissed him. He then wiggled away from both his parents. "Ball..." he said dashing off to go get his ball.
"Parker wait!" Booth said getting up and going after the boy, not wanting him that far from them even though he could see their blanket from where they were.
She watched them play ball and smiled. Parker was having a little problem with coordination. While he had his 8 year old body he had been 6 months old for over a month now and he was still acting like a 1 year old at home. She was a little confused through all of this where was he, 6 months, a year, 2, 8, somewhere in between? They both wanted the 8 year old back but at what cost to all of them?
Parker played ball with Booth for about ten minutes when he saw a few other boys playing catch with a football by the swings. He looked at the boys and then at Booth. "Daddy I play?" he asked hopefully. He wanted to play with other kids it had been so long.
Booth was hesitant he didn't want anything bad to happen but at the same time he couldn't deny his son a chance to play with other kids. "Okay, but stay where mommy and I can see you." he said firmly.
Parker smiled big and dashed off to go and try and start a game with the other boys.
Booth walked over to Bones but kept his eyes on Parker the whole time. "Should I be worried like I am?" he asked her as he put his arm around her waist.
"Yes I think we both should, I'm not sure I like him playing with other children right now either. When he played at school he was supervised by professionals and played with children who had similar problems. Now out here, could it make things worse? How do you ever let go Booth?"
"I couldn't tell him no...he wanted to try so bad." Booth said with a sigh. "I just keep thinking that he hasn't had any good interactions with other kids for who knows how long. I see that school document in my head." he was about to say something else when he saw Parker getting frustrated where he was standing waiting to catch the ball. "Crap..." he whispered not sure if he should intervene yet.
Parker was the 5th boy and since he was joining the catch game late he was going to be the last person to get the ball, this was not setting with Parker well. "My turn!" he exclaimed to the older boy who was throwing the ball to the younger boys.
The older boy shook his head and threw it to the boy whose turn it was.
Parker glared and stomped his foot. "Hey fucker my turn!" he screamed and went to charge at the boy.
Booth saw this and was sprinting to intercept Parker before he could get to the kid. He grabbed Parker around the waist and pulled him kicking and screaming away from the other kids.
Now she was concerned and followed Booth to the blanket. It was the first time either of them had seen even a flash of the older Parker since his regression, even the damaged one. She sat next to Booth waiting, unsure of what to do needing as much direction as Parker.
"Parker sit down," Booth said placing Parker on the blanket. "You need to take a second to yourself that was not okay."
"Day won't let me pay...I wanted to pay!" Parker screamed. "Day are fuckers, I hate dem."
"When you're not using those words WE will talk." Booth said taking Bones hand and moving so they were just a few feet away, but showing Parker he needed to be by himself.
"You a fucker too!" Parker yelled and spit in his father's direction but didn't move from his spot.
Booth groaned and looked at Bones. "Those boys didn't do anything...Parker just couldn't wait his turn."
"Oh, that I got, but what do we do, just wait him out?"
"I guess, I don't want to take him right home. I want to see if he can work himself out of this and give him another shot." Booth admitted. "I'd like to think he can work through this, talk with us and then have some more time to play in."
"I think that's a good idea. I'd at least like to try and eat or maybe feed the ducks? Didn't you say Parker liked feeding the ducks when he was little? I think maybe a good activity that ended well would be better than leaving now. Do you think I should try and go over and talk to him?"
Booth nodded his head, "Yeah...but make sure he understands what he did and how he's talking isn't appropriate. He knows what he's doing."
"Ok, just make sure you have my back, I may be going into hostile territory" she smiled at him waiting for his response.
"Right behind ya," Booth said with a smile of his own.
Parker was sitting on the blanket picking angrily at the grass in front of him grumbling stuff under his breath.
She walked over and sat next to him "Parker, honey look at Mommy." She was shock when he spat in her face but managed to control her temper and calmly reached for the edge of her t-shirt and wiped her face. "Parker," she said firmly turning him to face her "that is totally unacceptable I will not have you spitting on either me or your Father. If you are going to continue we will have no other choice but to go home. Is that really what you want to do? Or would you rather have a snack and feed the ducks?"
Parker jerked his head so he could look away again and looked down at his lap. He mumbled something softly that didn't make sense.
"What did you say baby?" she asked softy as she gently turned his head toward her again.
"I wana feed da ducks." Parker said louder this time looking at Bones with sad eyes.
"Ok come here let's get the food, and you and me and Daddy will go and feed the ducks" she said looking in his eyes trying to connect with him "Just know this one thing Mommy and Daddy will always love you and always be here for you no matter what happens or how you act. We might not like what you do, but we will always love you." She needed him to know they would never abandon him like he had been by Rebecca no matter what happen, no matter how he acted, he was loved and would never have a moment to fear otherwise.
Parker's lower lip trembled and he wrapped his arms around Bones' neck and buried his face in her shoulder. "I sowwy mommy."
"I know baby, do you want to eat first or feed the ducks?" She hugged him to her body feeling a little of his tension drain and looked to Booth for approval, her eyes asking what her mouth couldn’t right now. Did I say the right thing?
Booth smiled and mouthed 'I love you'. He was impressed with how Bones had handled things.
Parker thought about that for a second. "I wana feed the ducks first." He then climbed off her lap and went to go search through their basket for the duck food.
Letting him grab the food she reached out her hand for Booth to pull her to her feet and grabbed a quick kiss too. Then putting Parker between them they left for the duck pond.
