Chapter 23
“Okay Janet, no I’m not angry with you, you didn’t know that she was keeping information from me.”
Booth said with a sigh as he sat at the kitchen table tears in his eyes. “Of course I won’t keep Parker from you you’re his grandparents.” He smiled a little. “Okay talk to you soon…thank you for everything.” Booth hung up the phone with Rebecca’s Mom and leaned back in his chair with a sigh. He had just gained a bunch of information from Parker’s grade school and now his grandparents like Colin suggested that he do. He looked around the apartment and saw Parker happily sitting on his blanket in front of the TV playing with a few random toys. Bones was out doing some quick shopping and he really wished she was home now. He looked at the clock and noticed she had been gone almost an hour so hopefully she would be.
She opened the door struggling with her bags. Seeing Parkers playing she smiled at him, putting down her packages she went over and kissed the top of his head. "Hello baby did you miss me?" Looking over at the kitchen table she saw Booth. She wondered what was wrong. He usually took every opportunity to play with Parker he could. Walking over to him she could see he was disturbed about something.
"Hey babe did you miss me?" She thought maybe keeping things light might help him feel free to tell her what was wrong.
Booth smiled and pulled her down into his lap. "Of course I did," he said giving her a loving kiss on the lips. "Both your boys’ did." he said looking over at Parker, happy he was content to entertain himself for a bit so he could talk to her.
"I'm glad, Booth is something wrong? I usually can't get you to stop playing with Parker whenever he is awake."
Booth sighed, "I talked with Parker's school...his grade school and Janet, Rebecca's mom like Colin sug Nyre & TinyTeffers
gested." he waited for her to nod and then continued. "Rebecca was hiding a bunch of crap from me in regards to Parker."
"Ooookkk, like what?" She was a little concerned about what he had learned. She hoped they could handle whatever it was, and that it would help Colin's treatment of Parker. She sat still with her arms around Booth shoulders knowing her touch did help to keep him calm. "Is it really bad?"
"He got into fights regularly at school and was actually on a plan for aggression and mood instability with the district” Booth said again seeming shocked. "Since I don't have any legal custody to Parker, I did not need to know this. Janet also said Parker would get violent and throw major tantrums while at home and sometimes with her."
"Booth the fact that you did not have custody so they felt you did not have a reason to know is unconscionable. You are his father." She was beginning to get angry and she forgot she was the one who had wanted to keep him calm. "How can they defend their decision? I can understand Rebecca's mother to some extent. But for Rebecca and Parker's school not to tell you Parker was having problems is just it's just..." and she sputtered to an end and sat in his lap letting her temper get the better of her.
"I chewed them out almost the whole time you were gone," Booth said beyond being angry with them anymore. It took too much energy, he was more stuck on the fact that his son was struggling a lot more than he ever knew.
"Oh, well I guess that's good." The fact he defended Parker helped mollify her some "but did they say why he was violent or how bad it was? Did they know what triggered it?"
"It sounded like being told to do anything that he did not want to do and being provoked by a peer." Booth said. "But they also said that he was often the one doing the provoking. He got sent to the office many times for starting fights and calling names." he sighed. "I really did not spend enough time with my son."
She leaned her forehead against his. "Hey Booth, you could only do what Rebecca allowed you to. The important part is we are putting the pieces together now. I know you don't want to talk to Rebecca but in light of this new information don't you think we should or do you think his Grandmother was able to give us all we need?"
"She gave me a lot of information and also made me understand why Rebecca acted the way she did, she was really fed up with him being aggressive towards her." Booth looked at her with sad eyes. "Janet...who would never, lie said that Parker gave Rebecca a black eye earlier this year."
"But Booth how come she has never told you anything about his negative behavior?"
"Because she's a strange evil bitch that didn't want me to know anything about my son's life?"
"I understand how angry you are and believe me so am I, but I can’t ever remember him hitting or even raising his voice unless it was with excitement. What could have caused him to hit her?"
Booth thought about that, really thought about it and sighed. "Bones you have to remember the only time, before the past month, Parker has been around you is when he is happy. I will admit he can get rather angry when asked to do something he does not want to do. No, he has not hit me...but he's yelled a bit." he then added "nothing like he has recently though. It almost seems that he was able to suppress a side of himself when with me, maybe due to excitement?"
She kissed him and said "or love maybe. Maybe he just knows you love and accept him unconditionally. I know that the fact you have always accepted me unconditionally has been important to me. It is one of the reasons I fell in love with you so long ago." Just then his phone rang.
Booth smiled at that and then pulled away a bit so he could grab his phone off the kitchen table. He didn't look to see who it was before placing it to his head. "Hello?"
"Booth where the fuck are you?" He heard Rebecca's strident voice.
Just hearing her voice made his whole body tense and he gritted his teeth. "Why the fuck does it matter you bitch." he exclaimed before he could stop himself.
"Look, you bastard don't push me. I have some fucking paperwork you need for Parker. I came to your apartment and some bitch here told me you moved and she didn't know where, Now where the fuck are you?"
Hearing that she had something of Parker's Booth closed his eyes and counted to ten. "I'm at Bones' apartment." he said simply knowing she had been there before to get Parker.
"Oh and why are you there? I suppose you and that bitch are living together. Since it’s the middle of the day and you aren’t at work are you sponging off of her now?"
"Just bring whatever it is you have over and leave us all the fuck alone." Booth yelled before once again hanging up his phone and throwing it into the living room. This time though it almost hit Parker.
Parker watched the flying phone and instead of crying when it almost hit him he picked it up and decided it looked fun to chew on.
Seeing this Booth's eyes went wide and he dashed over. "Parker no." he said this time making the little boy's lip tremble.
"Booth calm down," she said as she went and sitting down on the floor with a baby who was starting to cry she pulled him into her lap. Once there Parker turned to pull at her shirt. She didn't think he was hungry just upset so she just bared her breast and allowed him to suckle and calm himself. "Booth am I to assume your anger means it was Rebecca on the phone?"
"Yeah," Booth said as he sat down on the floor with a sigh. He looked over at Parker and reached to rub his back. "I’m sorry buddy." he said feeling awful for both throwing the phone and scaring him when he told him 'no'. "She is bringing over a document that we need. I have no idea what it is."
"Well at least we might know more when she brings whatever it is. I probably should take Parker into his room when she comes. No need to flame her fire." Just then they heard an impatient banging on the door.
"Good thinking," Booth said as he watched Bones and Parker go down the hall. Once he heard the bedroom door close he walked to the front door and opened it. "You don't need to bang the door down." he stated as he stood firmly, not allowing her to come in. He was dressed simply in a pair of sweats and a white t-shirt, his feet bare.
"Look I'm not standing out here in the hallway talking to you so let me in or you'll regret it." She ground out the words in anger.
"Threatening me in my own house now?" Booth said with a raised eyebrow not noticing what he said.
"So you are living here you son of a bitch. Look its real simple. Let me in and we talk or I call and have Parker committed to a hospital. I am still his custodial parent. You only have whatever rights I decide to give you. So get the fuck out of my way and let me in to talk to you inside or I get the police and have him committed your choice."
"What reasons would you have?" Booth exclaimed even as he backed away so she could come inside. He didn't want her in his space, but at the same time he had a pretty good idea that she COULD find something to commit Parker.
"I'm his custodial parent I don't need a real reason. He is in a special school for mentally screwed up kids, he is a screwed up kid. His last day home he was violent I have no reason to believe he isn't still that way. I have no reason to believe you are getting him any treatment now either. So what do you think, want to fight me? He'll still be in the hospital while you get your act together."
Booth gritted his teeth together and clenched his fists. "Just give me the fuck what you came for."
"Wait a minute maybe I want more. Are you going to stop his child support payments?"
"I am the one fully paying for him!" Booth exclaimed throwing his hands up.
"Well now you are living with the bitch I want it doubled. You can afford at least twice that much now." She gave him a sly look.
"You know what...MY son was right to punch your ugly face!" Booth yelled, finding himself close to punching the woman in front of him too. Of course he wouldn't but by God he wanted to. He then looked at the file she was holding and reached over and snatched it out of her hand. "Now get the fuck out!"
As Booth pushed her out the door she shouted "Look you bastard, you just pushed me too far. Either you pay the extra starting next month or Parker goes to a hospital." She slapped him and turning on her heels she left in anger.
At the slamming of the door Bones came down the hall and took one look at Booth's face. "Booth what's wrong?"
Booth both his hands through his hair as he tried to breathe through his anger even though he felt like completely exploding and quite frankly doing some damage to one of the finely painted walls of the apartment. "I CAN'T BELIEVE I HAD A CHILD WITH THAT FUCKIN BITCH!" He yelled.
She could tell something was very very wrong and she wanted to know what it was, but she also knew for the first time she could not touch him, she backed up into the hallway and said "Booth, your scaring me, please baby what happened?"
Booth heard her words and closed his eyes to try and calm himself down. "I...I gotta go..." he said before quickly storming out of the apartment. He knew if he didn't leave he would do something he regretted and NEVER wanted to do anything like that. He knew he would have a lot of explaining and probably apologizing to do once he returned but that was better than what could have happened. He also knew he was in his bare feet, t-shirt and sweats but didn't care as he climbed into his newly purchased Toyota SUV and peeled out of the parking lot.
She heard Parker's crying and knew by his cry they had upset him. She went into his room and picked him up gathering his, piglet and Mr. Puck. Taking him into their bedroom she lay him down on the bed and began the long process of trying to calm him down, and it was a long process this time. She tried playing with him; she tried rubbing his back, his binki, even nursing him nothing worked. Finally they both fell asleep from exhaustion.
It was late evening before Booth returned. It had taken him longer than normal to calm since normally he had his work to help him clear his mind from family and emotional stress. Without it he found it took a full tank of gas and a sore ass from sitting in his car to calm and return in a somewhat better state.
When he walked into the apartment all the lights were off in the main area since when he had left it had been light and the blinds had been open. Seeing it dark made him quickly panic. 'Did she leave? Did I fuck up that badly?' his mind raced. He was about to go around searching like a crazy person when he heard the sounds of Parker playing towards the bedrooms. He quickly walked down the hall and found Parker sitting up talking in baby talk to Mr. Puck while Bones slept next to him.
He let out a sigh of relief as he walked in and sat down gently next to the two people he loved more then anything. "Hi buddy..." he whispered to Parker as he fluffed his hair.
Parker smiled up at his Daddy. "Da" he said holding up Mr. Puck so Booth could play with him. It was obvious he wasn't any worse for wear after what happened earlier.
"Hey Booth" she turned over as she felt him move toward Parker. "Owww I must have fallen asleep and missed one of his feedings. My breasts are sore. Come here baby are you hungry?" She noticed he was very wet and would need to be changed first. "Wow Booth he is drowning again," she laughed. "Can you change him? Then maybe we can talk while I feed him?"
Booth was so relieved that she was laughing with him. "I'll go get the stuff." he said getting up and going to the living room where whey they kept the things. He didn't feel like taking Parker away from Bones at the moment so he would change him in their room.
Parker made a face when his Daddy returned with the diaper changing things. "Da." he said in a slightly disgusted tone. "Ma." he said looking at her and reaching out to grab onto her breast. He was much more worried about food then being changed.
"Oh great it's already starting." Booth grumbled playfully. "Come here droopy drawers...believe me women don't like stinky boys."
"No we don't you silly boy," she said as she tickled him. Once Booth was done she settled between Booths legs and Parker made a grab for her breast. "Hey easy baby you will get your dinner just a minute." She bared her breast and Parker latched on greedily sucking. She looked up at Booth laughing "You'd think he hadn’t been fed in a month."
"He's a Booth," he replied with a smile on his face. He was already feeling a lot calmer now that he was with them. He automatically started rubbing Parker's back with one hand and her thigh with the other.
"Mmmmm Do you know I love your touch anywhere and everywhere on my body" His touch always made her feel loved, connected to him. "Booth do you want to tell me what happened with Rebecca or do you still need to wait longer?" She wouldn't push him tonight but she would find out soon. Somehow she felt whatever it has been it affected all of them
Booth took a deep breath, "She threatened to put Parker in a hospital if I didn't let her in the apartment so we could talk. Of course all we did was yell. When she found out I was living here she threatened me again saying if I didn't pay twice my normal child support payment she would get the authorities involved. Then he remembered something "I ended up kicking her out and never did look at the info she gave me."
As soon as she heard about Rebecca’s child care request she turned around forgetting Parker and jumped off the bed. "She WHAT? Just because you and Parker live here now she not only wants you to continue paying child support now she wants double?" Her voice was getting louder and louder. "I can't believe it! SHE throws MY baby! MY BABY out of her house causing him to regress into infancy and now she wants us not only to continue paying her support but double the amount? AND she wants this JUST BECAUSE YOU LIVE WITH ME..." Now she was pacing back and forth next to the bed her anger growing by leaps and bounds.
This was a Bones that Booth had never seen before. It was normally his job to have bouts of emotional outbursts, not her. Part of him was thankful she was this upset, but he didn't want this either. "Bones..." he said about to get up to calm her when he heard Parker whimper next to him. He quickly picked up Parker and stood up. "Tempe...honey..." he said going to put a hand on her shoulder to stop her pacing.
She pushed his hand away "No don't touch me Booth, where is her phone number I'm going to call her and tell her just what I think about her trying to extort us." Her anger seemed to be ramping up, "where is it Booth?"
"I'm not giving you her phone number, calling her will only make things worse. Don't you think I wanted to do that all freaking day?" Booth questioned trying to keep his own anger down again. It wouldn't do them any good to both freak out. Parker was thankfully staying somewhat calm as long as Booth was holding him, but it was obvious he was concerned and worried about Bones.
"Booth I want the number" she stood toe to toe with him not backing down.
"Mama!" Parker cried out tears welling up in his eyes. He did not want his Mommy yelling like that anymore it was scary and he did NOT like it.
She stopped dead in her tracks. "Oh baby" she cried as she looked at his troubled face. "I'm sorry I didn’t mean to yell. I'm not mad at you. Come here." She took him from Booth and sat on the edge of the bed "Booth I'm sorry I'm so embarrassed. I don't know what came over me. It's just she made me so mad.” In an attempt to calm down she remembered Rebecca’ reason for coming in the first time “did she give you the paperwork?" At his nod she continued "why don't you get it so we can look at it." She tried to settle Parker in to nurse but he was still a little upset so she just rocked him until Booth came back.
"You shouldn't be embarrassed; I'm the one that was gone the whole day because I was sure I would punch multiple holes in the wall," Booth said as he walked back into the room with the file folder he had grabbed from Rebecca. "You have a right to be mad at her and yell. Believe me I wish I could rip her a new one."
"Well maybe that can be arranged. Remember we do have the ability to get rid of a body without anyone finding it," she smiled. As soon as Parker heard Booth' voice he began to nurse, "Ok he's settled so what's in the paperwork?"
"If I had been married to her I would have said it was divorce papers." Booth grumbled as he pulled the 14 page packet out of the folder. The first few pages had a bunch of stuff which Booth had no idea about and referred to Parker's performance in school. "What the..." he said as he continued to scan through it. It wasn't until he got to a page that had Parker's name, birth date and the mention of a special education teacher that he got even more confused and worried. "What the..."
"Booth this is from his school and it is dated before his abduction, she never told you about it?"
Booth began reading the paper work out loud. Scanning over the part where it simply said his son's IQ was normal and he was doing okay in school. He did not understand why this paper work was even done. It wasn't until he got a bit farther that he began to realize.
"Based on Parker's educational levels of performance, he demonstrates difficulties when over stimulated in most subjects. Despite this, Parker has been able to stay within or above grade level on his educational subjects. Parker has difficulties keeping friends in the classroom. He displays a combative and argumentative nature with both his peers and adults. Parker does much better when taken out of the classroom to complete school work. He can succeed in the classroom if few children are present. When frustrated and over stimulated, Parker has become physically and verbally aggressive towards his teachers and peers. Parker displays rapid mood changes throughout the day and becomes defiant towards authority figures. Parker is often hyperactive and hyper vigilant especially in the afternoons and first thing in the morning. Transitions from home to school are particularly difficult.”
"Booth this paperwork shows he had some problems with anger management before his abduction. He has never had a problem with Dad at the Lab. If we had known this before now... I'm sure some of this is also effecting his treatment." She looked down at Parker who was obviously still suckling on this breast for comfort since he was not demanding to be moved to her other breast. Since she knew he was done she decided to move him, but was not able to. Using the new method she had learned from Booth she pinched his nose closed. As soon as he opened his mouth she moved him and got him to accept her other breast. "Booth I think we need to get this information to Colin tomorrow."
Parker did start sucking on Bones' other breast but his eyes were opening and he kept looking back and forth between his parents. What they didn't know was that he could sense the reason they were upset was because of him. Not that he did anything wrong, but he knew the high stress environment was due to him. He reached for Mr. Puck as he drank and closed his eyes, sleeping eating and snuggling with Mr. Puck and his parents was a much better idea than worrying.
