Chapter 25
She was sitting on the bathroom floor looking at the third stick.
She had gotten the tests the other day while she was out. The test results were the same and she didn’t know what to do. Should she tell him? He was under so much stress. He had told her earlier tonight he had almost gambled. She didn't want to be the cause of pushing him over the edge. As she looked at the results she started to cry.
Booth glanced down the hallway towards the bedrooms wondering what Bones was doing. He and Parker were playing in the living room and she had mumbled something and headed towards their room almost half an hour ago. "Stay here buddy." he said to Parker before getting up off the floor and heading towards their room.
"Stay," Parker repeated and then giggled.
Booth walked into his and Bones bedroom and didn't see her. It was then he noticed the bathroom door was close and the light was on. "Baby...you okay?" he asked through the door.
She tried to hide the tears in her voice before she answered "Yeah" she sniffed "I'm fine I'll be out in a minute."
"You sure? You've been gone for a while." Booth said his face scrunching up in confusion. Something was definitely not right; he could tell when she was lying.
"Yeah I'm fine," she said a little more forcefully as her tears came a little harder. She tried to hide her crying in a towel. There was no way she wanted him to hear him cry.
Okay now something was wrong because Booth was sure he heard her sniffle. He reached for the door knob and found it locked and was shocked. "Bones...Tempe...open the door." he said gently but forcefully at the same time.
Knowing she had no choice she reached up and unlocked the door then sat back down hiding the test sticks, forgetting she had left the boxes in plain sight on the counter.
Booth heard the door unlock but when it didn't open he was a bit confused. Shaking his head he opened the door. "Baby what's going on?" he questioned as he walked in. He then noticed the tears and knew something was indeed wrong. So intent on making sure she was okay he hadn’t looked at the bathroom counter yet.
She continued not to look at him, but stared at the wall. Maybe if she didn't look at his face he would go away and she would not have to give him the bad news. Her voice was a little stronger "I told you Booth there is nothing wrong."
"Okay then is it that time of the month or something? Because you're crying Babe" Booth said with a slight laugh, not realizing what he said would more than likely make things worse.
"WHAT, why would you say that?"
Booth stepped back a little and held his hands up in a surrender pose. "Whoa...sorry." It was when he turned to get her a tissue from the box he saw the open pregnancy test box on the counter and he became hyper aware. He saw the 2 others in the trash can and saw his girlfriend sitting on the toilet crying. He swallowed hard and picked up the box, turning back to her. "Did you...take this?" he asked his voice catching.
She looked first at him then at the box and nodded her head and started crying harder. She really didn't want to tell him right now. He didn't look very happy and this news wasn't going to make him a happier she thought.
Booth swallowed hard and quickly walked to her kneeling in front of her and resting his hands on her knees. "Baby it’s okay...we've got a lot of time to keep trying. You know how much I love trying anyway." he said with a smile, hoping to get her to smile too.
"How did you know?" She hick-upped and handed him the negative sticks. "I know we decided on having a baby and you are quite fertile so it must be me. We'll never get pregnant" She had started crying again.
Booth pulled her down into his arms and held her as she cried. "Baby we have only had sex a dozen times" he said trying to make her feel better. "Just because I have a son does not mean I'm that fertile, it will all work out" he said kissing the top of her head.
Parker walked so he was standing in front of the doorway, Mr. Puck in one hand and Mr. Ooby Doopy in the other. "Pay wit me?" he asked a worried look on his face. He could tell something made his Mommy sad and wanted her to come play so she would feel better.
She looked up at her son from Booths arms, trying to process both his words and Booths. "I'm coming Parker so is Daddy just a minute." Turning to Booth she said, "I'm sorry I don't know what has gotten into me lately my emotions just are all over the place and I feel like I don't have any control." She was glad Booth's touch and Parker being there did help her gain control because this out of control Temperance she defiantly didn't like. Once she was under control she kissed Booth and went to play with Parker.
"I think it's in the air," Booth said as he followed after both of them. "I don't think anybody in this house has much control recently."
Just to make Booth's point even more true Parker dropped Mr. Puck and once he did he saw the toy and glared at it. "Bad uck!" he said kicking the toy like it was its fault it fell.
She was sitting on the floor tossing Mr. Puck to Parker and trying to catch it when he threw it back. Parker's aim was way off; well actually it was exactly like a 2 year old she laughed to herself. "Booth" she called to him noticing he was at the kitchen table "did you call your friend? You said you had someone you could call about your gambling." She was a little nervous about him being on the computer unsupervised but she had agreed not to act as his guardian and she thought that included watching his internet surfing too. But ..."after you do why don’t you come and play with us?"
Booth too was nervous about being on the computer but he had to check his e-mails. He looked up when Bones started talking and nodded in agreement to what she said. "Yeah I was just about to call him," he said clicking out of the internet and instead grabbing his cell phone. He dialed Hanks number and waited for him to answer.
She was glad he was off his computer and calling his friend, she hoped Hank was available. She thought back to Booth's comment earlier, yes, they all had been out of control lately. She was sure the stress accounted for some of it but she wondered what accounted for the rest. As she was thinking Parker threw one of the larger hard plastic trucks they had bought him. "Oww Parker that's not what Daddy and I bought that truck for," she did not laugh this time since Booth had told her this would tell him what he had done was ok.
"He'll be over in about half an hour," Booth said as he went to sit down next to his family. "What are we playing?"
"Tuck," Parker said as he grabbed the truck he had just thrown. "Bad Tuck." he said then giggled since he knew throwing the truck was a bad truck.
"Yeah, I think he thinks we're playing throw the truck and see if we can hit Mommy in the head. Since he can't hit me in the head with anything soft" she smirked at Booth and looked ruefully at Parker.
Parker giggled, "Mammy!" he said grabbing another toy and trying to throw it at Bones' head.
"Parker that isn't a very fun game. That might make mommy ouchy" Booth said in a warning tone. "We need to be gentle with our toys."
"We sure do" she cried as he let go of another car before Booth could stop him. Fortunately she was able to get her hands up in time to block his shot and protect her head. "Parker" she said in a firm voice "stop throwing those toys or I will take them away right now. I have told you you can throw Mr. Puck in the house and that is all. Do not throw your cars or trucks again do you understand me?"
Parker made a rather angry face before throwing the last toy that was sitting next to him, the whole time looking right at Bones as if he did it just because she told him not to.
"PARKER!" Booth exclaimed as he quickly picked up the boy. "You need to go spend some time away from your toys" he said carrying him over to the kitchen table and sitting him down. "Two minutes." he could see the defiant 8 year old coming through his son's behavior and wanted to nip it in the bud as quickly as he could.
Parker automatically slid off the chair and started throwing a good full blown temper tantrum on the floor by the chair. To his credit he did not move from the general area Booth had put him. Booth shook his head as he walked over to where Bones was still sitting with the toys. Parker was loud and it was hard to ignore but he knew that is what they had to do. "So Hank will be the first outsider to be brought into this." he said nodding to the oversized toddler.
She looked at Booth "will you be ok with that" she asked? She stood up preparing to go to Parker to pick up her crying baby not understanding why Booth had just left him there. "Hush baby Mommy's coming to get you."
"Bones, he's doing that to get your attention and for you to cuddle him. He's in trouble that's why he's over there." Booth said knowing this was really her first experience with Parker like this since she saw him as 'her' child.
"Oh, so I'm just supposed to let him cry?"
"Well he's not hurt, hungry and right now I could honestly care less if he's wet." Booth said. "He is throwing toys after we told him not to and so now he is throwing a temper tantrum." he sighed.
"We need to get used to this, from what we've heard through information from Janet and his school even 8 year old Parker throws these fits." he then added. "I actually see a lot of him right now." it made him sad that the only time he saw his real 8 year old son was when he was throwing a fit.
"Oh" it was hard for her to look at the older child she had come to love in the little one. "This is hard Booth, he is starting to come back and I want him to I really do but it is bringing up all sorts of issues for me." She sat back down and climbed into his lap as they watch for Parker to calm down.
"I know," Booth said as he kissed the top of her head.
It was then the doorbell rang and hearing this Parker stopped crying and got all excited. "Door!" he said before happily bounding off to the door.
"Okay that boy is going to give me whiplash!" Booth grumbled as he gently put Bones down and followed after Parker to make sure he didn't open it. "Parker wait!" he said just catching the boy around the waist before he opened the door.
With a squirming Parker at one side Booth used the other to open the door and see his good friend. "Hey!"
"Hey Booth, nice digs didn't know the FBI was paying so well now" he said as he rolled past Parker and Booth into the living room.
"Hank!" Parker exclaimed jumping up and down excitedly. He remembered his daddy's friend that used to roll him around everywhere; it was a lot of fun.
Booth closed the door and shook his head in disbelief at the way his son was acting. "Sadly the FBI isn't paying me anything these days...I've got myself a sugar mama." he said with a laugh and walked over to Bones putting his arm around her. "You remember Dr. Brennan."
"MY mama," Parker said going over and grabbing onto Bone's other leg looking up at his daddy with a possessive look on his face. "No daddy mama."
Bones looked down and Parker and said "yes Parker I'm your Mama not your Daddy's Mama. Daddy wasn't talking about that kind of Mama." As she talked to him she ran her finders through his hair to comfort him. Attempting to reach out and shake Hanks hand and not being able to move while Parker has such a tight grip on her leg. "It's nice to see you again." Turning to Booth "What is a sugar mama and is this who you invited?"
Booth laughed and shook his head, "I will explain later Bones." he said and then smiled big at his friend. "Well welcome..."
"Ok Booth why am I here? You didn't invite me for tea and if you did I'm out of here because I don't have time."
"Darn it Bones put away the good China," Booth joked and when nobody seemed to think it was funny he sighed. "Why don't we continue this in the living room." when they all got situated,
Booth pulled Parker into his lap. "Well...things have been rough around here; Parker has been going through some really rough stuff." Booth began. "I don't think we've talked since he came home right?"
"Booth, since you can’t seem to get to the point maybe the good Dr. here can,
"Well yesterday Booth almost started gambling so he said he would call you today."
"Hey I thought I would give the back story so he would at least understand WHY I’m under stress and gambling." Booth grumbled with a pout on his face.
Thinking it was funny Parker made the same exact pout face.
"Booth cut the bull shit. The back story is unimportant at this very moment you know what comes first."
Booth slightly glared at Bones but sighed and looked at Hank. "I admit I am powerless over gambling… that my life is becoming unmanageable and I want help".
"Ok now we can begin. You said there is a lot of stress going on. I had heard about Parker's abduction and obviously he has been returned, is there more to that story?
Booth looked at Parker and then back at Hank. "A lot has happened, he's going through some major trauma induced issues...and come to find out his Bit...his mother...was hiding a lot of things from me." he then looked at Bones. "She's being great though...Bones I mean. We're together...and she is letting us living with her since I am no longer working."
Hank looked at all of them sitting together, to look at them you would think they were a normal family with nothing going on. But he was sure there was more than just what Booth had said so far. "Booth you've been through more so what has caused you to go off the wagon this time?"
Bones jumped in to defend him as she always did when she felt he was being criticized even when she didn’t understand the context. "I don't think you really understand how hard this has been on both of us. Dealing with all of Parker's changes has been very difficult and Rebecca has been at the root of most of the..."
Just then Parker decided to show Hank two of the things that was indeed different about him. First he stood up and did a bit of a 'pee pee' dance before pausing and getting a very content look on his face. Once he was finished with THAT he turned to Bones. "Mama hungry." he said climbing into her lap and grabbing at the front of her shirt.
Booth saw both of these things and blushed, not able to say anything.
"Excuse me just a minute Hank" Bones said "I need to change Parker and I'll be right back."
Hank waited for her return talking to Booth quietly about nothing really other than to tell him it was important for both of them to be there for this conversation.
Once Bones returned she sat with Parker on her lap and he pushed at her shirt. She knew it was time for him to nurse and easily made her breast available to him not really caring who was there.
