"All right, brat," Jeb said as he moved behind his sister. Kenna made a face and turned to look at him once he knelt down to her level. "Bedtime." Kenna made another face, but didn't argue. With a huff, she stood up and turned to look at Wyatt. A moment later, she turned back to Jeb and leaned to whisper in his ear.
"I don't know," Jeb replied, reaching up to hold her shoulder. "But you could ask." Kenna made another face then shook her head. She nudged Jeb and stepped behind him, hiding herself from view.
"Father," Jeb called, getting Wyatt's attention from the fire.
"Yeah," Wyatt replied, lowering the tin cup in his hand and blinking the spots away before he looked at Jeb. He could see his daughter peeking out from behind Jeb, then darting back. They were still sizing each other up, for the most part, but it had only been half a day.
Kenna jabbed Jeb in the back of the leg. "Ow!" Jeb turned and gave her a dirty look, then stepped toward their father. With a nod toward his sister, Jeb asked:
"Ken wants to know... Can she give you a goodnight kiss?"
