Kenna watches him from behind a tree. Jeb told her to keep an eye on him, but she's still not sure. Mommy always told her that her Daddy was a good man, who made funny faces and gave the best hugs.

But, this man doesn't make funny faces. He won't talk to anyone who comes near and just keeps staring at the trees.

Jeb said he was Daddy, but she knows that can't be true. Mommy said that Daddy died before she was born, and Mommy never lied to her. But, Jeb knows him, and she knows that Jeb doesn't lie, either.

She leans slightly, as he gets up from the log he's been sitting on and moves toward the trees. She doesn't want to follow, but Jeb trusted her to watch him. Giving a look toward the camp, she can see Jeb talking to some of the grownups. She knows how far she can go by herself, and so long as she can hear Miss Sadie call her name, she won't get in trouble.

But, if he goes too far, he might get lost. If he gets lost on her watch, Jeb will be angry, so she better follow. Besides, he's new to the camp, and new people have to stay close, so they don't get hurt. Or worse, meet up with a bear. With a deep breath, she nods and commits to follow him. Kenna creeps across the open space, then ducks down behind another tree.

She can see him a few yards ahead, taking care as he moves into the trees, because the ground is a little uneven. A lot of the grownups always say they have to find a horse, then go into the trees and come back. She knows there really isn't a horse, of course, but she doesn't want to spy on anyone if that's why they went into the trees. She looks back to where Jeb was, but sees that he's moved into the tent. Looking back, Kenna realizes she can't see where her father went, and the panic starts to rise.

"Did you lose someone?" she hears. Kenna's eyes widen and she turns slowly, looking up at Wyatt Cain as he looks down. Wyatt kneels down slowly as Kenna moves back. "Are you watching me?" he asks calmly. Kenna is scared, but she nods.

Wyatt smiles at her, ever-so-slightly, and glances down at the dirt. "Did your brother put you up to that?" he asks again. Kenna nods, then shakes her head, which makes Wyatt smile again. "You're doing a very good job," he finally tells her, then nods.

"I owe you an apology," he nods again. "For the way I acted earlier." The shock of finding out he had a second child, so soon after everything else, had caused him to make the wrong move. Instead of saying 'hello' to the little girl, he looked away and then walked away.

Kenna takes a breath, ready to speak, but pauses. She looks everywhere but at him then focuses on his shoes. "Jeb said you were sad."

Wyatt gives her a sad smile and leans slightly to catch her eye. "He's right." He isn't exactly sure what to say to her, of course. "The man who hurt your mother-"

"Zero," Kenna provides, a hateful bite in her tone to match the angry lock of her jaw. Wyatt can't help but smile, because she looks just like her mother did when riled up.

"He told me that she was alive," Wyatt says quietly, "but I learned he lied." Glancing away, Wyatt takes slow breaths, because thinking about that grave makes him want to rip the trees out of the ground with his bare hands. As his thumb rubs against his wedding ring, the feeling of a warm hand on his causes Wyatt to look up.

Kenna had moved closer and reached for him. She knows how much it hurts to not have Mommy there. Especially at night, when the bad dreams come. Her eyes are starting to water, and her lower lip is starting to twitch, but she won't cry. She is a big girl and she will be tough, like Jeb.

Like Mommy.

Wyatt gives her a sideways smile and moves his hand to cover hers. "It's a very pretty name you have," he nods.

Kenna sniffs, not as good at hiding the oncoming tears as he is. "My name is McKenna," she says, pausing between the first two syllables. "Mommy said it was my Daddy's name." Wyatt smiles again and nods.

"Do you have a middle name?" he asks, letting go of her hand and reaching up to push stray hairs out of her face. Kenna watches him intently and nods. Wyatt leans back just enough and puts his hand out. "My name is Wyatt McKenna Cain, and it is very nice to meet you."

Kenna looks from her father to his hand, then steps back to match his motion. Holding her hand out, she nods. "My name is McKenna Lin Cain and nice to meet you back."

"Lin?" Wyatt asks, making sure her heard her correctly. He's smiling, though, because Kenna's hand has disappeared in his hold. But she hasn't pulled away.

Kenna nods again. "It means forest. 'cause I was born in the forest." She leans closer and raises her free hand to his ear. "It snowed." Wyatt pulls back just enough to look at her and smiles, which makes her smile, too.

From the other side of the clearing, Jeb watches his father and his sister for a moment before glancing skyward.

Maybe the Cain kids will get through this, after all...
