I recently ran across this article from the Wisconsin Historical Society.
It includes the menu from a New Year's party in Milwaukee in 1843, and a brief discussion of the custom of young men spending their New Year's eve calling on available women.

When I posted regarding the Pancakes Aplenty historic gastronomy event last weekend, some people were interested in the recipes. The event, by the way, was a tremendous success, and Sarah Lohman was quite surprised at cooking pancakes over a hearth for an unexpectedly large crowd of 200 people!
