Besides the fried new potatoes with steamed garden babies, I cooked a mess of assorted garden greens, with grated daikon (from garden), grated onion (not from garden), garlic, salt, and balsamic vinegar.  And a...thing...of leftover refried beans, leftover mashed potatoes, ten tiny packets of croutons I found in the breakroom, and the last of the ( ... )

Last Sunday I finally got the potatoes in.  This weekend I hope to do the rest of the garden:  all the heat-loving stuff, plus some second plantings, plus the rest of the drip irrigation.  But first  I need to clear and prep the rest of the wide rows in the "back forty"...the lawn has not yet completely released its hold on that part of the garden ( ... )

Last Saturday I went house-shopping with Z.  We checked out the "Planet Express" house (dome home with stone additions).  It was super-cool and the land was great:  wooded/hilly/rocky; it was even within commute distance of Madison, and there was a small herd of buffalo nearby!  But it wasn't within easy distance of the hiking/kayaking/etc. land ( ... )

Falcon cam update:  one egg has hatched.  Poor kid must be thinking the world is awfully wet and blustery.

In other bird news, oriole and hummingbird have been sighted in the yard.  The hummer especially is early, but the honeysuckle is in bloom and I have the sugar feeder up.

Met Z for dinner at Great Dane last night.  My "usual" (not that I get there often) is the sesame seared tuna salad, with maybe a glass of Crop Circle Wheat Ale, but this time I had the walleye fry.  In Wisconsin, every restaurant that wants Friday business has a fish fry:  Mexican restaurants, Japanese restaurants...even the fast food places roll ( ... )

I tried making kale chips.  They tasted fine, but the process is wasted on baby kale:  they look like something that's been left on the dock too long, and have the texture of tissue paper.  I'll wait for the big leaves for making more chips ( ... )

So, last weekend was the UWSP trivia contest.  This is a fundraiser for the local college radio station, and a Big Deal in Stevens Point.  It runs non-stop from Friday 6pm to Sunday midnight.  Roughly, you have the length of two songs to call in an answer; the number of teams calling in the correct answer determines the point value of the question ( ... )

Fresh Air had an interview with Hugh Laurie this week.  I only caught the last half, but the whole thing is available online and I aim to catch up later.  Terry Gross is an interesting interviewer; I will listen to interviews of people I'm not specifically interested in, just to see where the conversation goes.  But I'd listen to a Hugh Laurie ( ... )

I may send brother-who-used-to-live-on-street a copy of the Apophis contest paper that Ski and I wrote a few years back.  The paper didn't win, but researching and writing it was great fun, and might help convince him that I'm not "wasting my life".  He feels that I could do better than the job I currently have.
