As far as I know, they don't make, nor sell, Hot Cross Buns in the United States. What a damned shame (eta: I've been corrected, and how!). So I had to make my own this year - a first for me, as yeast and I are historically not best friends. Despite a lack of prettiness, symmetry, and a bit of a brown bum, I am rather tickled with the results;

Recently, I brought my sourdough starter out of its winter hibernation and made a couple of garlic parmesan loaves. :D Then, due to Easter, I've been seeing recipes for hot cross buns, which made me want to try making my own. I am trying to be a good earth inhabitant and this bled over into the easter/spring feast.
Natural egg dyes.

To make the dye, bring the water and color source to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer for about 15 minutes. Cool and strain through cheesecloth-lined strainer, then stir in vinegar.

2 raw beets grated
2 cups water
2-3 tsp white vinegar
