"Today, we will be continuing our lesson on Cleromancy," Professor Wu told the class as the last student filed in. "Please pull out your pendulums," she lifted her crystal suspended on a chain as an example, "And open the maps I have laid across your desks."

"In this exercise, we will work in pairs," she continued. "One of you will ask the question, and one of you will hold the pendulum at the center of the map."

Darcy hadn't even THOUGHT of doing some sort of magic-show or fortune telling skit! Unlike Professor Wu, she would have thought it was a fabulous idea, of course, but then Darcy didn't really need the talent show to reassure her that everything would be all right, either. She had enough faith in her elders that she very rarely even questioned the safety of the outside world, let alone Hogwarts.

She beamed as Professor Wu described their activity for the day, and eagerly unfolded her map and began rooting around in her bag for her pendulum. Darcy looked around for a partner, now a little uncertain. What would be the better thing to do: hold the crystal or ask the question?! They both sounded like fun, and she wanted to do whichever would be harder. While the rest of the class paired off, she studied the map and her pendulum, considering.

To Professor Wu, a fortune-telling skit performed in the Talent Show would just add more mockery to the serious subject of Divinations. She had heard the students not in her class and how they insulted, even if under the guise of teasing, the subject. The one good thing as that she was not Professor Trelawney, who even when gone was still shown disrespect and considered a phony to many of her peers.

She glanced around, noticing as her class paired off that the younger Delaney sister seemed to be lost in thought. "Miss Delaney," Professor Wu addressed her, "Would you like to be my partner?" She gestured towards the table in the front of the room. She would need one to fully demonstrate the pendulum today.

Darcy startled slightly when addressed by her teacher, and gave only the briefest of hesitations before nodding enthusiastically. "Oh, yes please!" she said, and hopped up to go to the front of the room. She realized after the fact that perhaps she sounded a little silly, being so into a Divination lesson and eager to please a professor, but OH WELL. This was her favourite class, after all.

If the others couldn't see how wonderful it was, well, that was their loss.

She had assumed they would be using Professor Wu's equipment, and she walked up to the woman and smiled politely, awaiting further instructions for a moment. Last week she had asked lots of questions, but now that she was in front of the class for a demonstration, Darcy was feeling a bit more quiet for sure.

"Today, we will be continuing our lesson on Dowsing," Professor Wu leaned against her desk in the center of the room. "Please pass your essays on the subject towards the front."

"Was anyone successful in their dowsing endeavor?" she asked as she circulated the room and then picked up the pile of scrolls waiting for her. She doubted they would find precious gemstones buried in Hogwarts grounds, and water was easy to detect, but she was curious to what they discovered if anything.

Vivien had arrived to class early, careful to get all of her things out on her desk before the professor started class. Double checking her essay, Vivien reluctantly passed it forward, not entirely willing to let it go just yet.

When Professor Wu asked for volunteers, Vivien tentatively raised her hand. "I found this," she paused, holding up a very tarnished pocket watch. She held it out to the professor, expecting that she would want to examine it.

"I suppose I was just looking for treasure, or something, and I found this."

After Professor Wu set the essays on her desk, she turned to Vivien with a gracious smile. It was always pleasant when Vivien spoke, as Professor Wu didn't fear complete distraction as she did with Sean Brightwell, and Vivien at least appeared interested in the subject. When she brought up the pocket watch, Professor Wu nodded.

"When you were searching, what ideas, what images were you focusing on? Did you just want something in general? Or were you thinking of something or someone specific?" she asked.

Oh! Vivien certainly was interested! Divination's was one of her favorite subjects. Some people thought it a bunch of balarky, but she personally found it darling! It was tangible to her, if not anyone else, and if there were such things as witchcraft (which there was obviously was, as she was Hogwarts) why couldn't everything they learned about in Divination's be true as well.

"Well," Vivien started, trying to remember exactly what she had been thinking about. Her memory was not as wonderful as she wished it was, and she sat in silence trying to remember. "I think...I think I was focusing on the best sites around Hogwarts for good pictures. They're surprisingly hard to come by, as the sun is always obstruct-," she realized a moment too late that she was rambling. Looking down in embarrassment, Vivien fidgeted in her seat. "It doesn't have any numbers, or even tick marks. It has little pictures," she flicked it open to show Professor Wu, "but I can't tell what any of them are."

"Today, we will be taking a break from I Ching, although I feel the need to point out that we are not finished with the subject. We still have a lot of ground to cover, but as it is an intense subject, an easier form of Divination might be better to cover this week." Professor Wu told the class. It was evident that she didn't need to bring up the Talent Show as it would be on most students minds and distract them from their studies.

"We will be covering Ailuromancy today, which is studying feline movement to predict the future." Professor Wu motioned towards a black cat situated on her desk, and stroked its back.

Deirdre's face fell when Professor Wu said they wouldn't be studying I Ching today, though she brightened marginally at the reminder that they weren't finished with it for good. She had been quite enjoying learning all about I Ching and was looking forward to writing home to her father all about it. For once, it would be a topic that he wouldn't immediately know ten times more than she did!

But she could wait if Professor Wu thought everyone else might need a break from the subject. Even Deirdre had to admit that I Ching was difficult. Not once did the talent show cross her mind or how it might affect her classmate's ability to focus on their work.

When Professor Wu continued, explaining the lesson, Deirdre sat up straighter in her seat, eager to learn. She recalled reading about Ailuromancy in her textbook, but she hadn't expected they'd get a chance to see it in action so soon. She prepared her quill to take notes, hovering over the parchment before her and barely able to hold still, she was just that excited!

"Ailuromancy started in the Egyptian civilization, later moving to the Greek and Roman civilizations. They primarily used it to predict weather patterns, something we can understand, knowing that cats -as well as other animals- seem to display heightened acuity, heightened senses towards natural phenomena such as rain." Professor Wu continued.

"In effect, by studying feline movement, we open ourselves to the possibility of expanding our own intuition. What do they sense that we cannot? By understanding that, we gain knowledge ourselves." She scratched the cat behind its ears before moving away and allowing it to do what it wanted.

Deirdre's quill moved furiously as she jotted down the professor's words. It would make sense that Ailuromancy would start with the Egyptians, after all, they worshiped cats, didn't they? Still, using cats to predict the weather was a rather interesting concept. Deirdre wondered how exactly it worked. How did you know what signs the cat gave meant what about the coming weather ( ... )

"Today, we will be pausing in our study of I Ching for a breather," Professor Wu told the class. "We will resume I Ching next week, as there is still much ground to cover on the subject, but today, we will study an easier form of Divination. It is easier in the sense that there are not eight trigrams and sixty-four hexagrams to memorize, but one which requires a good eye and will develop your intuition."

Daphne felt a mild sense of relief when Professor Wu announced that they were taking a break from I Ching. It was an important subject for their NEWTs, obviously, but it had been growing a bit tedious in the past few weeks. At the mention of having a 'good eye' and 'intuition', Daphne smirked satisfactorily to herself. She had long cultivated an ability in intuition!

However, she had not cultivated much interest in Ailuromancy. Or cats, in general, actually. She ignored the cat that Professor Wu indicated entirely, and her whole demeanor slowly shifted into one of elegant boredom. She did hope that this was such an easy subject that they'd at least be let out early. A cat's movements were hardly something Daphne believed had much bearing on the sorts of Divination she was interested in. What could a cat tell her about the movements of the Dark Lord? Or about her own destiny ( ... )
