3rd Year - Ravenclaw / Hufflepuff - Tuesday 10amprofessor_wuApril 9 2007, 02:39:52 UTC
"Today, we will be continuing our lesson on Cleromancy," Professor Wu told the class as the last student filed in. "Please pull out your pendulums," she lifted her crystal suspended on a chain as an example, "And open the maps I have laid across your desks."
"In this exercise, we will work in pairs," she continued. "One of you will ask the question, and one of you will hold the pendulum at the center of the map."

Darcy hadn't even THOUGHT of doing some sort of magic-show or fortune telling skit! Unlike Professor Wu, she would have thought it was a fabulous idea, of course, but then Darcy didn't really need the talent show to reassure her that everything would be all right, either. She had enough faith in her elders that she very rarely even questioned the safety of the outside world, let alone Hogwarts.
She beamed as Professor Wu described their activity for the day, and eagerly unfolded her map and began rooting around in her bag for her pendulum. Darcy looked around for a partner, now a little uncertain. What would be the better thing to do: hold the crystal or ask the question?! They both sounded like fun, and she wanted to do whichever would be harder. While the rest of the class paired off, she studied the map and her pendulum, considering.

To Professor Wu, a fortune-telling skit performed in the Talent Show would just add more mockery to the serious subject of Divinations. She had heard the students not in her class and how they insulted, even if under the guise of teasing, the subject. The one good thing as that she was not Professor Trelawney, who even when gone was still shown disrespect and considered a phony to many of her peers.
She glanced around, noticing as her class paired off that the younger Delaney sister seemed to be lost in thought. "Miss Delaney," Professor Wu addressed her, "Would you like to be my partner?" She gestured towards the table in the front of the room. She would need one to fully demonstrate the pendulum today.

Darcy startled slightly when addressed by her teacher, and gave only the briefest of hesitations before nodding enthusiastically. "Oh, yes please!" she said, and hopped up to go to the front of the room. She realized after the fact that perhaps she sounded a little silly, being so into a Divination lesson and eager to please a professor, but OH WELL. This was her favourite class, after all.
If the others couldn't see how wonderful it was, well, that was their loss.
She had assumed they would be using Professor Wu's equipment, and she walked up to the woman and smiled politely, awaiting further instructions for a moment. Last week she had asked lots of questions, but now that she was in front of the class for a demonstration, Darcy was feeling a bit more quiet for sure.

Professor Wu pulled out a plush cushioned stool from under the center table and positioned it on one side, close to the map and pendulum. She smiled, motioning for Darcy to sit as she stood next to the younger girl.
"Okay, for those of you asking the questions, take a moment, breathe, relax, and come up with your question. Simple yes or no questions are permissible, as are more complex how and why questions. It is your choice," she told the class and then turned to Darcy.
"Ready, Darcy?" She handed her the pendulum and raised her arm to position the pendulum directly above the center of the map. Professor Wu looked back at her class. "For those of you holding the pendulums, please do as Darcy is demonstrating. Hold the pendulum directly above the center of the map. You don't need to twirl or move it as it will start to move based on your own body's internal movements as well as the natural movement of our world."

Darcy smiled back at Professor Wu, and plopped herself down on the stool, rapt with attention. She didn't want to miss anything and look bad in front of the class! Plus, in her head she was already halfway through an owl to her father about the experience, so it really needed to go well.
She was very curious about the kinds of questions people would be asking, but realized quickly that she may not have much of a chance to listen. She nodded once when asked if she was ready, and took the pendulum willing. Darcy then let her arm be lifted, trying to stay relaxed enough so that Professor Wu could position her easily and stiff enough to hold the position.
Darcy beamed when the class was told to follow her example, and she did her best to breathe slowly and keep her movements to a minimum. Thoughts of her owl and even the rest of the class faded as she checked her position on the map and then focused on her partner.
"Ready when you are, Professor," she said with a smile.

Professor Wu returned the younger girl's smile, taking a deep breath, and relaxing. "Okay," she said. "I have my question." She glanced around the room again. "Does everyone have their questions?" she asked.
"As you see, this map is one of the simpler designs, composed of words and written thoughts rather than a diagram or blueprint of a place or the school. You can use any sort of map that you wish, the map would be dependent on what sort of question you had," she continued, waving towards the map.
"Now everyone is set. Just watch your partner with the pendulum and watch where the pendulum swings to. It should give you an answer to your question," she explained and took a seat almost-across from Darcy. She gave her another smile, indicating that she was doing well.
"In this exercise, we will work in pairs," she continued. "One of you will ask the question, and one of you will hold the pendulum at the center of the map."
