Out of line? Maybe...

I'm curious, not on what the 'vegan' response is, but on each individuals perception of the acceptability of abortion as I feel this and veganism would be closely intertwined? I probably won't respond to any responses, as debates like these tend to get heated, I'm just curious what the majority of vegans here believe in relation to this matter ( Read more... )

I'm pro-choice.

The religious right likes to make us out to be murderers who use abortion as a means of birth control, but...

nobody is pro-abortion. nobody's like "yeah! i'll just go get me an abortion - fuck condoms!"

Absolutely. All ethical issues aside, abortions are damn expensive. It's just not a viable form of birth control to be used "all the time" but something done in an emergency by those who have access to the care AND can afford it.

Or those who are so desperate/poor they will do it WITHOUT adequate care..

Actually, if you go to a family planning clinic and tell them you have no income, it's only about $100. Much cheaper than having the baby.

That depends on where you live. Not all areas have family planning clinics, and not all of them will be able to subsidize the procedure to that degree.

I found the article I was looking for. ABORTION AND ANIMAL RIGHTS: ARE THEY COMPARABLE ISSUES?'Abortion is a terribly complicated legal and social issue; and so is the issue of animal rights. Indeed, these topics have accounted for a great deal of recent writing in the fields of moral philosophy and applied ethics, social theory, and feminist studies. Although some feminists who support the right to terminate pregnancy have voiced strong support for animal rights, many others have refused to commit themselves, or, worse yet, have indicated hostility to animal rights, because they believe that recognition of animal rights will be one step down the road toward recognition of fetal rights ( ... )

Pro-choice. In favour of having contraception and contraceptive advice available, supporting women who have the slightest inclination to continue the pregnancy to make it possible for them to do so, etc - in other words, minimising the demand for abortion, but keeping the supply open.

I'm hugely pro-choice. For someone to tell me I have to stay pregnant, whether I get that way through contraceptive failure or my own stupidity, is a form of torture and enslavement. Sorry, but I get to decide what happens in my uterus. If you don't like it, fuck off.

However, I acknowledge that it's a hard choice for most people to make, and and unpleasant experience as well. I think the best thing is to keep it legal and safe, but to support lots of sex education and access to birth control, so that less women are forced to make that decision.

I also find it ironic that many of the right-wingers that are "pro-life" are also in favor of cutting social benefits. So, what, you don't care about the baby once it's born?
