Out of line? Maybe...

I'm curious, not on what the 'vegan' response is, but on each individuals perception of the acceptability of abortion as I feel this and veganism would be closely intertwined? I probably won't respond to any responses, as debates like these tend to get heated, I'm just curious what the majority of vegans here believe in relation to this matter ( Read more... )

I'm all for the right of each individual to make the hard choices that they need to make in order to function healthily in the world. I believe that a pregnancy should be a wonderful and much-wanted thing, and that to force someone to continue a pregnancy they do not want or cannot cope with is a form of mental and physical torture. Before anyone jumps on me for taking pregnancy lightly, I have recently discovered that I may never be able to have children - pregnancy for me is now even more of A Big Sacred Deal than it was before. My situation has, if anything, made me more firmly pro-choice - a pregnancy should not be a thing that causes suffering.

I will point out that this becomes a highly emotive subject and is likely to devolve into a slanging match, so I'm just going to post this and not look again :)

I think killing anything sucks.

I also know I could never do it.

but damnit I know some things are hard. times are hard. Im not going to rule out that there should be no abortion, and I know Im going to get flack for this, but I would have to learn about a specific case before I would be able agree with the persons desicion to have an abortion.
Not saying I make the rules, or should rule over, or all almighty in my decision, that is just me opinion and I HATE side-steppin difficult issues.

excuse me, but i dont think you realize what "sentient" means....so i thought id tell you.

sentient=

"Having sense perception; conscious:
Experiencing sensation or feeling. "

this means when it feels pain and thinks for itself, not when its heart beats.

i am under the current persuasion that an unborn baby begins to feel rather early in the pregnancy...

Pro-choice. I believe that every woman has a right to make their own choices. I don't care about circumstances -- I'm not a person who thinks abortion is okay in only situation A or situation B, not C -- if it is the wish of any mother to abort a pregnancy for any reason, then it is her right to do that.

*Raises hand* =0)

I was at a pro-life march holding a sign "as a former fetus I oppose abortion" and some lady came up and said "the difference is, you were wanted". (the prochoice slogan "Every child a wanted child") Really. What if I hadn't been wanted? Does that make me less of a person?? I should have died before I was born? Today I run my own life. Today I am wanted by those not blood-related to me... and it makes me 'angry' that some woman can say I shouldn't have a life now IF I wasn't "wanted" by my mother when I was conceived.

I'm not trying to goad you but: where do you draw the line in preventable preganacy? What if that vegan condom breaks, when it was within the expiration date? or the .001% fails some girl on the pill?

To say pro life in cases of preventable pregnacy is a hard line to walk, in my opinion.

so a child who's father was a rapist doesn't deserve to live? That's pretty unfair.
