prison au, chapter 8 out of 11. or so i think at this point.

Nov 23, 2007 00:03

You know how I said I wouldn't write Prison AU when not inspired? Well, obviously I haven't been very inspired this month, and haven't gotten a lot of it written. But, uhh, I think I got my groove back, and it's admittedly mostly due to some tiny words of encouragement from this_is_cd who assured me ridiculous delays between chapters is just fine.

first chapter // second chapter // third chapter // fourth chapter // fifth chapter // sixth chapter // seventh chapter

jailbird songs, chapter 8 out of 11

notes; All of this AU will eventually be under the tag for prison!au.

A couple of days since one particular evening had passed, and this morning Kyuhyun did not have the pleasure of waking up next to Sungmin, nor had he dared to fall asleep next to his cell mate. He didn't regret anything, that wasn't it - but there was a certain pleasure in savouring the discovery of this new thing, and okay, maybe he just wanted to take things slowly.

He did wake up seeing Sungmin's smile.

“Get up or the guards will drag you up,” Sungmin said.

“Right,” Kyuhyun said and sat up hastily, rubbing sleep out of his eyes. He looked outside the the cell. “Why are they lining us up?”

Sungmin threw his clothes on his bunk. “Hurry up and I'll tell you.”

Once they both stood in a row between Eeteuk and Donghae, Sungmin began his explanation.

“It's Salon Day. Basically, like a year ago somebody in S1J3, we forget who, mocked the warden's hair style. The warden was cool with it, but some inmate from another cell block wanted to play suck-up in hopes of a pardon from the warden, so he started standing up, and said something along the lines of 'Your greatest achievement is dying your hair different colors', referring to the fact nobody in S1J3 at the time had the same shade of hair. So the warden laughs at this, and some idiot from S1J3 - we forget who --”

“It was Kangin,” Eeteuk said next to them.

“No, it wasn't,” Kangin replied. “Shindong, it was definitely Shindong.”

“It was Kangin, back when he was Shindong-sized,” Eeteuk said with a smile.

“I was never Shindong-sized!” Kangin exclaimed.

“I'll take that as a compliment!” Shindong yelled from his end of the row.

“Anyway,” Sungmin continued, “somebody from S1J3 yells that this cell block turns changing hair styles into an art form. And the warden says, 'If you mean that, I will sponsor new hair styles for everybody in S1J3 every month for 3 years.' And apparently, if we win the bet and do this for three years, the warden will go to work without trousers for a week.”

“That is ... nuts,” Kyuhyun said.

“I think it's been rather lovely thus far,” Eeteuk said happily.

“Still, it's fairly nuts,” even Donghae admitted.

“The warden has his moments,” Kangin said gloomily. “Wouldn't you agree, Officer Han Geng?” he then asked, raising his voice.

Han Geng turned to look their way and then smiled at Kangin. “Kangin-sshi, how about giving Eeteuk a little room for breathing?”

“No, you don't understand, Officer, he's so old, if I take my hand off his hip, his entire skeletal structure will collapse,” Kangin launched into an explanation as Eeteuk rolled his eyes.

“I'm willing to risk it,” Han Geng said sardonically and turned his back to them. Kangin hugged Eeteuk even closer.

“So, um,” Kyuhyun began, looking at Sungmin, “I have to dye my hair?”

“Or just get it cut, however you like,” Sungmin replied. “Just be nice to the hair dressers. Kangin learned it the hard way.”

“Did they beat him up?” Kyuhyun asked, eyes widening.

“Worse,” Sungmin said with a smile. “Shaved his head.”

“That was a fun month,” Eeteuk commented. “His head could function as a shoe polisher.”

Kangin folded his arms. “They shaved Shindong's too, that month.”

“But he requested it, and it actually looked good on him,” Sungmin said.

“And how the fuck was I ever a shoe polisher?” Kangin asked Eeteuk as they were given permission to move to the barbershop of the prison.

“What do you think?” Heechul asked Hyukjae, looking at his own reflection in the mirror. “Too short?”

“No, no, you actually look like a boy for once. It's refreshing,” Hyukjae replied.

“I don't think we're close enough for you to be making that joke,” Heechul said irritably.

“Sorry, noona.”

“Aish, I will kill you in your sleep.” He then smirked. “Or tell Junsu we slept together.”

Hyukjae jammed a rolled up magazine to Heechul's side, blushing furiously.

“You're too easy,” Heechul said disappointedly and turned to Donghae. “You don't look too different.”

“Just got a trim and stuff,” Donghae said, flipping through a magazine. “Don't want to change my style too much.”

“You realize that's the point of the bet, right?”

“What bet?”

Heechul sighed. “I'm glad they're kicking you out.”

“You mean, releasing me on parole.”

“Same difference.”

“I love you, too,” Donghae said with a smile.

“Dick,” Heechul retorted.

“I like that too,” Donghae replied.

**

“Donghee-sshi!” Boa greeted him happily. “I like your new hair style. May I?”

“Um, sure,” he said and bowed her head just the slightest to have her hand reach for it and touch it.

“Lovely,” Boa said.

“Thank you,” Shindong replied.

He was worried, as he had no idea where any of this was going. The last two times he'd talked to Boa, at work and in the cafeteria, each of her words seemed to be carrying a double meaning, and though others did not notice it in her casual manner of speaking, Shindong picked up on it instantly. Or then it was just him and his dirty 4-years-in-prison imagination playing tricks on him. He hadn't imagined it'd be like this. He'd thought of nursing a love for her, and her secretly liking him back, but this, this weird opportunity. No way. He would wake up soon, surely.

“Shall we do this, then?” she asked.

Shindong looked around. There were no stereos. “I'm not sure what you mean,” he said honestly. “I hope you mean dance.”

Boa grinned. “It's a kind of a dance.”

He blushed, and she took a step closer to him. “I don't know.”

“Why not?”

“Somebody might--”

“They won't find out.”

“I really like you,” Shindong blurted.

“I really like you, too, Donghee-sshi.” She smiled, waiting for his response even when he didn't have any, or the one he had, he sort of didn't want to let out, because they really shouldn't and she really shouldn't and he above all really shouldn't and--

“I, uhh, there are guards outside,” Shindong finally said.

“That's fine. Did you know I have an office?” Boa asked, taking Shindong by the hand and leading him to a door he'd thought was always locked.

“No,” he answered.

“Neither does the Warden. Or the guards. Or the janitor. I clean it myself, see,” Boa said.

“I see,” Shindong said as they walked down a slightly a narrow hallway where they paint was cracking on the walls, the floor dirty. “That's handy.”

“It is indeed,” Boa said, opening the door at the end of the hall way. “I like a little peace and quiet.”

As soon as the door clicked shut behind them, she pulled Shindong close for a kiss, pressing him against the door.

“Is this an affair?” he asked when she finally pulled away, now busy unbuttoning her own shirt.

“No,” she replied. “It's a duet.”

“A collaboration?”

“Yes,” she said and shut him up with another kiss, then pulled away. “A repeat collaboration.”

**

Donghae sat up happily as he saw Dr Kim appear behind the cell bars.

“What is it?” Kibum asked, catching his breath.

“Dr Kim!” Donghae said and stood up. “What took you so long?”

“I heard it was an emergency so I thought you'd gone into shock and were at the emergency ward or something,” Kibum said. “But you seem ...fine,” he added, looking Donghae over, clearly disappointed.

“I'm not fine,” Donghae said, frowning. “They took away my magazines.”

“What magazines?” Kibum asked suspiciously.

“My psychology ones. And they won't let me have any new ones.” Donghae pouted.

“This is your emergency?” Kibum asked, completely stunned.

“Yes,” Donghae said. “Heechul lied to the guards that I abuse the magazines.”

“I saw how the pages stuck together,” Heechul commented from his own bunk, head hidden behind a book on cats.

Kibum looked disturbed. “Lee Donghae, I'm sorry for your loss but I really have to go now--”

“No, Dr Kim, don't go,” Donghae pleaded and hurried to the bars, nearly pressing against them to get as close to Kibum as possible. “You came all the way over here, couldn't we just ... talk?”

Kibum heard Heechul snort behind his book. Donghae's other cellmate Hyukjae was following the situation keenly.

“I don't think it's a good idea. We have a session later today,” Kibum said, and clutched his files tighter to his chest, stepping back to prevent Donghae getting too close to himself. He looked around and saw nearly every prisoner in the cell block staring at him and Donghae.

“It was really lovely of you to drop by,” Donghae said softly and looked at Kibum in that intruding way he always did.

Kibum became flustered but forced himself to smile politely. “It's my job, after all. But next time you better be dying before you call it an emergency.”

Donghae was grinning. “I was dying, sort of.” He gestured Kibum to come closer and considering the fact they were surrounded by guards, Kibum decided to take the risk of Donghae doing something and leaned in closer.

“I missed you,” Donghae said, his voice lowered.

Taken aback by the sheer corniness and yet the undeniable sweetness of Donghae's line, Kibum could only stare at the grinning inmate, and eventually close his mouth.

“Maybe it's better you don't have those magazines, Donghae-sshi,” he just said. “See you later.”

“Bye,” Donghae said and really was pressed against the bars now.

Kibum knew he should've been beyond weirded out but even so, all he could do when walking back to his office was grin to himself.

**

Donghae sighed happily as he walked back to his bed. Hyukjae's eyes met Heechul's, they were both grinning.

“I think he's in love with me,” Donghae said. “Did you see him? He ran!”

“Because he thought one of his patients was dying and he didn't want that to end up in his records,” Hyukjae said.

Donghae wasn't really listening. “Maybe he'll get me some more magazines.”

“You wish,” Heechul said. “He looked really freaked out about it.”

“Still, I think Donghae does confuse him sexually,” Hyukjae said.

“I think he's the one who confuses Donghae sexually,” Heechul retorted. “Who jacks off to psychology magazines?”

“I didn't actually,” Donghae defended himself. “They were just ..there. Accidents happen.”

“Let's talk about something less gross for a change,” Hyukjae said, cringing.

Donghae wasn't in the mood for talking, either, and as Heechul began on some topic, Donghae zoned out pleasantly, just smiling to himself.

**

“Hey Shindong,” Yesung greeted him at dinner. “How come you took a shower before dinner?”

“Um,” Shindong said, avoiding everybody's eyes, “I went running.”

“That's funny,” Yesung said, “because I was at the gym and I didn't anybody on the treadmill.”

“I ran around the basketball court,” Shindong said.

“I went there too, it was closed for cleaning all day.”

“Okay, I had dance lessons so I reeked and took a shower,” Shindong said irritably. “Happy now?”

“That's even funnier because you've had tons of dance lessons after which you haven't probably even washed your hands,” Yesung noted.

“Bunnybun, leave him alone,” Ryeowook said. “It's not a big deal.”

“It's suspicious,” Yesung insisted.

“Back down, Sherlock,” Kangin snapped. “If he did just have sex with Boa in every position imaginable, I don't wanna hear about it when I'm eating.”

“You just had to give us that mental image, didn't you?” Eeteuk asked, glaring at Kangin.

“Shit.” Kangin buried his face in his hands.

“Hey guys,” Sungmin greeted everybody, Kyuhyun at his side. “Shindong, I saw you coming out of the showers earlier today.”

“Stop talking, stop talking,” Kangin pleaded.

Sungmin ignored him. “I heard a rumor from one of the kitchen staff.”

“Maybe if they didn't gossip so much, the food would taste better,” Yesung said, frowning at the undercooked rice on his tray.

“It was about transferring more prisoners here,” Sungmin said. “But it's not like we have the space for it.”

“There have been cutbacks, though,” Eeteuk said. “Prison overcrowding is a problem and recently they had to shut down a prison because the building was about to collapse.”

“How do you know all that stuff?” Shindong asked.

“I read,” Eeteuk replied. “Apparently they could put 15 more people in our cell block and still be within law.”

“Eurgh,” Kangin said. “But then we'd be like ..S1J3 China.”

“Just depends on whether the warden allows it,” Sungmin said.

Everybody stopped to consider it and ate in silence for a long moment.

**

Donghae settled down on the chair across Kibum's and watched Kibum smile. This was fantastic, this, and them right now, so relaxed and functioning together. Sure, he would still love to pull Kibum close and possibly blow him before the end of the session but the point was, he wasn't going to. Kibum was sorting through papers again - god, always papers, and forms and notes, Kibum would probably have him file an application just to make out a little, put Donghae on a trial period but even just that was kind of hot to him right now.

He wasn't sure how he'd live on the outside without seeing Dr Kim, and briefly considered stalking him, but no, that would be criminal - but then they might put him back into jail, though probably not in the same one with Dr Kim, that would be a little too convenient---

“Ready to start, Donghae-sshi?” Kibum asked him.

“Absolutely,” Donghae replied, snapping back to reality. No, he wouldn't stalk Kibum. He wouldn't have to. Kibum would call him instead and he'd have problems and Kibum would think it would best if they saw each other to discuss these issues, and Kibum would give Donghae his address. Kibum's apartment would be stylish but small and his home office would be in his bedroom and Donghae would be forced to sit on the bed and eventually Kibum would join him and---

“...can't keep doing that all the time,” Kibum finished with a frown.

“I'm sorry?” Donghae asked.

“You can get distracted very easily, I understand this was a problem you've had since school but you have to stay focused during these sessions,” Kibum said.

“I'm sorry, Dr Kim,” Donghae apologized. “I have so much on my mind, what with the ..parole.”

“I understand,” Kibum said, his lips quirking. “Before we begin I have a request to make. Donghae-sshi, I think you ought to stop visiting Father Eric so much.”

“Why, are you jealous?” Donghae asked.

“No!” Kibum was blushing. “He specifically asked me to tell you this.”

“Oh,” Donghae said, just a little disappointed.

“Why do you think he wants you to stop seeing him?” Kibum asked.

“No clue,” Donghae shrugged. “We get along fantastic, Father Eric and me. Though purely in the platonic sense, I assure.”

“Well, what else,” Kibum said. “He's a priest.”

“I don't know, somebody from S1J3 from like a decade ago was said to have slept with a nun who worked at the prison.”

“Just an urban legend, I'm sure.”

“I personally think it might be true,” Donghae said.

“Regardless, I think you really ought to consider visiting him less frequently. You don't seem like the religious type so this shouldn't be a problem,” Kibum said, writing down something once again.

“I don't know if I can do it, to be honest.” Donghae sighed. “I sin a lot, Dr Kim.”

Kibum cleared his throat. “Well, try sinning less?”

Donghae couldn't help thinking how fantastic it would be to sin with Kibum and he didn't even notice he was staring at Kibum, until he saw the color on Kibum's face, and he looked at Kibum in the eye and could've sworn the air crackled a little.

“Well,” Kibum said awkwardly, looking down, “moving on.”

“Yes,” Donghae replied, feeling a little awkward himself now. “Have you considered the magazines?”

“What magazines?”

“The ones they confiscated from my cell.”

“Oh, those.” Kibum smiled. “Maybe you should go find something else to read in the library.”

“I don't want to read something else.”

“As flattered as I am by your new interest in psychology, I really think--” Kibum began but Donghae interrupted him.

“Did you know people who are most interested in psychology usually have mental issues themselves?”

“Yes, I did know that.”

“Well?”

“Well what?”

“Do you have mental issues?” Donghae asked. “I mean, I'm not questioning your abilities, just curious.” Maybe they'd have something in common after all. Perhaps not the best thing to share, a history of mental problems but it was a start, Donghae figured.

“I do see a therapist but have no history of mental illness,” Kibum replied. “I meet with Dr Lee Minki twice a month.”

Donghae looked at him, appearing composed and carefully choosing his words. God, always so fucking appropriate, Donghae thought and it was really no wonder anybody would want to shake him up a bit and just then Kibum looked up and smiled.

“Are you jealous?”

Donghae flushed. “What? No, I.. wait, what?”

“Nevermind, then, let's move onto whatever we really ought to be discussing this time..” Kibum scribbled down some more notes and Donghae finally re-gained his composure.

“Okay,” he simply said and Kibum began asking him questions about issues of importance and his past crazy moments and all this really dull stuff but all Donghae could do was sit there and answer.

His brain slowly wrapped itself around the fact that Kibum had just flirted with him, genuinely fucking flirted with him. Donghae shifted in his seat and answered Kibum lamely and honestly, and not even a bit too honestly and meanwhile thought of unarousing things because getting a hard on now would just kill him.

As the session ended and Kibum looked happily at his notes, Donghae stood up and felt dizzy and on the way back to his cell wondered how he had even for a minute doubted that Kibum couldn't top, because Kibum sure as fuck could top and had been topping him just there. Donghae would hate this if it hadn't been such a turn on and given, it was difficult for Kibum to do something that Donghae would consider a turn off but regardless, this was big.

This was progress.

Notes: Yeah, I'm fairly certain right now there'll be 11 chapters. Plus epilogue. Plus things AFTER epilogue for I am a retard.

Hmm about this chapter... ShinBoa - there should totally be repeat collaboration. Evecaution was not enough! Ahem.

Salon Day is like this really good idea that wasn't quite as good in writing.

Sherlock!Yesung is a wet dream. Well, no, it just fit the bill.

Donghae is so misunderstood. And Kibum totally wants it.

I obviously have nothing intelligent to say about this chapter. Next one .. will hopefully be sooner than the gap between this and chapter 7.

Oh and despite SJ China reference, I am still not writing Henry sorrysorrysorry. I'm NOT one of the ONLY13 crowd, I couldn't give a fuck, but I'm just uncomfortable writing a guy I've only seen pics of.

Right, will stop rambling now, hope you enjoyed. :)
