Living on an island hadn't stopped Veronica Mars from finding ways to fill up her days. She had signed up for more classes than she would ever have envisioned herself taking of her free will in Neptune and spent the rest of her time checking in on people and running through training sessions with Teyla or Arya (or Taser, but those were the ones ( Read more... )

After hovering at his side for a day and a half, I give Brian a breather. Or maybe I give myself one. He's so fucking quiet and easy going and fucking sweet, for Christsake, and those wide, trusting eyes are just a little too familiar. I figure if I stick close, it'll be okay. It'll be okay and I won't have to feel guilty for ditching him, just for an hour or two.

I make it as far as the waterfall and stop, standing on the edge with my hands scrubbing over my face and the air whooshing out of my lungs.

"Fuck..."

And of course I'm not alone. Of fucking course. Coughing out a strained laugh and lowering myself to the edge, I murmur, "Hello, Veronica," and lean back on my hands, head tipped back toward the sky.

Of course. I picked this spot for the peace, but there's no such thing as perfect avoidance on an island the size of ours. Still, at least he doesn't look like he's armed.

"Neil," she said evenly. "Fancy seeing you here."

It had been three months at least since the last time she'd spoken to him -- or in front of him, properly. That hadn't been a night or conversation that much included Neil, or one she wanted to remember. She'd been thinking more in the vein of 'pretending it never happened,' actually. Here's hoping I'm not the only one.

"Yeah, well, I sorta live like... right through those trees. You're kinda swimming in my backyard," I smirk, close enough to the water that my heels and the ratty hem of my jeans are getting wet.

"You know, I think I wore that same suit once." Back when I had tits of my own to fill it.

"Ahh," Veronica said, nodding. She reached up to brush her hair back. Right. That was the kind of thing she probably should have been keeping an eye on, she told herself, but she rarely took Neil into account when making swimming plans. "I bet it looked better on you. I mean, you've -- you've really got the body for that there."

Awkward, thy name is Veronica Mars.

"Two waterfalls," said Dean, standing a few paces away. He stared at the waterfall with something like disgust. "And no Waffle House. What kind of justice is that?"

The trouble with floating around on your back by a waterfall is that, peaceful as it seems? It makes hearing people approaching a little difficult.

Veronica kicked a little to bring herself rightside up, startled -- not by someone being there. No, that was fine. It was just that it was a voice she recognized and had, despite her condolences to Sam at New Year's, sort of hoped never to hear again. "We're kind of short on that stuff here," she said. "The whole lawmaking process took a while, so we haven't gotten around to actual justice yet."

On other hand, it had tiny blonde chicks in swimsuits littering the ground, and that was not nothing.

"I take it those guys with the coconut badges don't count?" he asked her, slipping into his most charming smile.

"Careful there, Sparky," Veronica said, eyebrow raising. "My dad's pretty pleased with his coconut badge. Although he'd probably be more pleased with a Waffle House at this point." There was only so much crime-fighting to be done in these parts after all. She looked him over carefully, trying to look like she wasn't doing exactly that.

Ellie knew she couldn't just mope for the rest of her time on the island. Deciding she needed to get out and get some sunshine, she thought it was a good day to sit out. Of course, the clothes box decided to only give her a strange blue floral-patterned swimsuit among the dozens of other even worse swimsuits, so she eventually decided to give in and take it.

Of course someone else was in the area, though she was glad, upon getting closer, it was someone she knew. Putting down her things neatly, she headed to the edge of the water. Veronica seemed so peaceful, though, so she opted not to call out to her. Instead, she tested the water's temperature with her foot, considering taking a dip.

When Veronica caught sight of the movement, she brought herself right side up, treading until her feet touched ground. "Ellie, hey," she said. "It's safe, I swear. Nothing but shrieking eels and the occasional piranha."

"Is that all?" she said, biting back a grin as she stepped in further. The water was warm, and she found it was easy to get used to. "And here I was worried there was something really dangerous in here."

The thought hadn't even crossed her mind, really, especially seeing Veronica in the water already. She finally headed in fully, until she could swim instead of walk.

"Guess the piranhas aren't biting today," she mused as she got closer. When she came to a stop near Veronica, she smiled. "How are you?"

"Lucky us," Veronica said. Pointless belt aside, it seemed as if the clothes bin had been kinder to her than to Ellie. Brushing her hair back over her shoulders, she shrugged. "I've been worse." It was nearly always true. "And it's nice out here. How about you? Find anything interesting to patch up lately?"

For those from the Shades being wet and having fun weren't exactly expressions that meant the same thing. Rosie Palm was a girl who knew survival like the back of her hand and knew that sometimes to get what you want, you had to do what others weren't exactly willing to do and more importantly you had to do with a smile.

Service with a smile, you can't exactly beat that.

Still, she may be dressed like she knew what the bathsuit she was wearing was for, classy and a little bit out of style for a modern girl, but she was something out the past, if folks were to believed, and part of being historical meant she could dip her toes in, but there was no way she was getting wet.

"The noise is nice though," she said, talking through the din of the waterfall to the extremely blonde girl already there.

Veronica looked over, blinking, then stood in the middle of the water to look around. It sounded like the girl was having a conversation already, but she was the only one there. "It is," she said tentatively. "Very... waterfallesque. The temperature's nice."

It was like talking about the weather with a girl who looked like she'd walked out of another time. Around here, she probably had.

Arching an eyebrow, Rosie licked her lips and dipped a toe in again.

"Hmm, waterfalls, how quaint. But they aint nothing without a windmill or somethin' to go along with them," she said, smirking slightly. "It's a bit...wet for my tastes."

"You know, I thought that, too," Veronica said. "I just wasn't used to water being this wet before the island. Funny that."

Lucy hadn't been expecting anything other than to just be taking a walk when she came across Veronica in the water. Fully clothed or not, the idea did inviting, and so with a wide grin on her face, she slipped out of her sandals and walked closer, stepping carefully over the rocks in her bare feet until she came to one she could sit on. Hitching her skirt up -- the kind of peasant skirt the box seemed intent on always giving her, something that seemed to be more out of Sadie's closet than her own -- she slowly took a seat, bare legs dangling down into the water.

"Having fun?" she called, nearly laughing, her legs moving under the surface of the water. It was reminiscent, vaguely, of the dock back in New York, though this would be a considerable upgrade, even without the sentimental value.

"I don't believe in fun," Veronica deadpanned easily. "Bah humbug." She kicked upright, treading water and moving closer to Lucy's rock. "What about you - enjoying the day?" She tilted her head back, airy and playful.

"I was until just now," Lucy deadpanned in return, biting on her lower lip in feigned innocence. "Really, though, I'm kind of wishing I thought to wear something I could swim in. I really haven't done enough swimming since I showed up here."

"Ouch." Veronica pressed a hand to her heart. "Y'got me right in the ol' pump," she drawled. "And a walk to the Compound's too much trouble, right?" She had half a mind to pull Lucy right in with her.
