Now I love the Burning Man spin-offs, including the one that takes place at Coopers, heaven knows. still, i have no desire to see our beloved Pennsic become one

Of course, I remember when the bardic cricles were all Leslie Fish's/Kipling's "Cold Iron", "Song of the Shield Wall", "Catalan Vengeance," "Old Time Religion," and Scifi Confilk, but they were a lot of fun. I miss that.
It's just a my opinion, mind you. Pennsic has always been a very big tent, with room for many different games. REmember the vampire/werewolf thing back in the 90's? Glad that blew over. Still, the mechanism seems to be self-correcting. We have no means of policing authenticity, and I think that's probably a good thing.
If I've given offense, I assure you none was meant.
If you like, we could go into the matter more deeply in some other venue. I would be very blithe to make your further acquaintance and to attempt some small deed of arms, if you are so inclined, as you seem to be a gallant gentleman from whom much honor might be gained.

For about a third of the people at Pennsic the event is just a party. Granted this trend has been growing for years, it’s just that this year I had my nose rubbed in it.
I have heard from some long standing Pennsic goers (20+ years per), that the amount of partying is way down. Way down. That it is a much tamer beast than it used to be.
Now, that does not directly correlate with your point, but it shows how use of the word "party" is different to different people. You are referring to the event as a whole, and my friends to the less than stellar choice of camp parties in general.
I think that is more of a 'where do you camp' function. If you are in the bog, party central, you'll see lots. If you stick to the plains, things would seem pretty tame.
Here I thought it was just me getting old and crotchety when I saw two guys walking through Merchants' wearing utili-kilts and fitted t-shirts (in the middle of the week

Tis just a small syndrome. The problem is that we aren't sharing our joy for the fun things we do in the SCA with these "Burning Man" outsiders. Joining us in our parties and activities has to be more fun for the Blake's Seven crew than hanging out in their plastic post modern nightmare. We must have more fun, and invite them to join us in our fun, bringing them into the fold in some small way.
The burners are hobbyist, but committed hobbyist. Maybe if we let them on the inside, they will try some more of the things we do...
Just an idea. (The FUNdamentalist Society 4 Creative Anachronism... It's nice to be accurate, but very important to have FUN!)
In this context, a "'burner" is a participant in the Burning Man Festival subculture, or that of its many spin-off regional events ("baby burns") which take place around the country through the year. (including a very pleasant one, Frost Burn, at out beloved Cooper's Lake in the depths of winter).
