A "burner" is somebody who goes to Burning Man, in which four times as many people as go to Pennsic show up in the middle of the Nevada desert.

Pardon me, I'm from the friends-of-friends list, but I too have been calling Pennsic "Burning Man East" on occasion. Mostly I'm thinking of the big bog parties when I say that, though, and the more I look at the Burning Man Web site, the more I realize that Burning Man is probably WAY weirder than anything I've ever seen at Cooper's Lake!

That said ... I try not to let the un-SCA stuff get to me at Pennsic, because I should really look in the mirror and say, "So, what have YOU done that's OOP?" I still camp in a mundane tent -- any $$$ that might have gone toward a period pavilion will be dedicated instead to an electrical project that will make my condo less hazardous to live in. Every year I try to improve my kit a bit and try not to compare myself too harshly to people who have been in the SCA six or seven times longer than I have.

The idea of selling SCA memberships at Pennsic Troll is intriguing, but I wonder if it would have unintended ramifications. For example, if a 100-person barony got 10 new members who then ignored all other mailings from the SCA between Pennsics, that would lower the response rate quite a bit in the next baronial polling for a new B&B. That would not impress Their Majesties.

That (non active members on the barony rolls) is a most excellent point.
