emergency clips, garters and bustles.

attempting to quickly bustle a too-long skirt or hold up some ornery stockings? i've found that ironing board cover straps can make a pretty good quick-and-dirty substitute, as long as you're not going to try anything too vigorous, or don't mind chancing them chewing up whatever you're attaching them to. i've found a series of them worked extremely ( Read more... )

Cool! I took apart some suspenders and stuck the clips on some pre-measured strips of fabric to use as clip-on straps for a crappy corset top that doesn't fit in the bust. It was that or rip out the zipper and add grommets, and this was easier! Corset-suspenders!

You could also maybe try sheet suspenders--they have those little rubber stopper thingies on them like some modern garter belts do, so no chewing through your fabrics.

ooh, another good one. i personally love alligator clips, and they didn't seem to bother my socks at all, but i think another option is always good, in case of something more delicate. i'd also hope that they'd work better than some of the crappier garter belts too, and less the expense. next time i spot some, i'll give 'em a test run as well.

you're quite welcome! it's a real pain in the butt, yeah, and then in addition, i can never seem to getting around to bustling things properly by sewing in hooks and eyes before i want to wear them. i just happened to be at the dollar store, saw the straps, and went "hmmm." they held up all night, too--not bad for a dollar. i figured i couldn't be the only one that kept running into this particular problem.

You could even try little kid's mitten clips--those used to have the same metal clip thingies on the ends like suspenders.

And I've tried the emergency straps using suspender parts trick. I lucked out and found a pair of suspenders at the thrift store that had heavy black elastic as the strap bit. Worked great and outlasted the crap corset top.

Sheet suspenders actually have better garter grips than most modern garter belts do, except they only come in white. They use the old-style metal & rubber garter grips meant for all-day wear rather than the wussy little plastic ones you see on modern lingerie. Stockings slide right out of those.

argh, that's what i meant to pick up the last time i was out--i was intending on getting some of those to hold up our arm warmers, as the ironing board cover straps only seem to come in white as well, and they're somewhat too long.

excellent, i am not above grabbing some just to get the clips, then. i can swap out some of these other crappy ones.

You can buy the metal garter grips at Farthingales.
They have silver with black or white tabs, all black, and all white. You can buy just the tips or removable tips as well as premade removable garters.
