attempting to quickly bustle a too-long skirt or hold up some ornery stockings? i've found that ironing board cover straps can make a pretty good quick-and-dirty substitute, as long as you're not going to try anything too vigorous, or don't mind chancing them chewing up whatever you're attaching them to. i've found a series of them worked extremely well bustling the train of a former wedding gown, and did okay holding up socks. imho, they're not as good as my good garter belt (that i appear to have lost, alas) but they were definitely superior to the cheap crappy plastic ones.

so, yeah--ironing board cover straps. they're a strip of elastic with two alligator clips on both ends, they normally come in packs of 4-6, and usually you can pick them up anywhere that sells household type stuff. i picked mine up at the dollar store. they're not glamorous, but they're fast, cheap, easy, and they'll do the job.
