He took a sip from the odd little paper cup of coffee he'd ended up getting at Deathbucks before coming to take his place here among all the cookies. He knew he'd need that coffee to get through the day. His night had been very long, and filled with sugar and flour and cookie cutters and Ahiru.
He'd thought she was crazy for wanting to do something like this, and the more he considered it, the more he felt he was right. This was ridiculous. He wasn't sure how many cookies they'd made, anymore, but there were hundreds. And they were all made for the sole purpose of giving to whatever random people wanted to take them.
Well, fine. As long as people did come to take them. Fakir sure as hell didn't want hundreds of cookies to take home. He didn't want anyGlancing up at Ahiru as she sat down next to him, he raised an eyebrow at the cheerful demeanor that was still quite firmly in place on her face ( ... )

"That's too early. And besides, making people happy is more fun than concentrating really hard on something I don't really understand."
She looked at the coffee cup in front of Fakir and made a face. "...I dunno how you can drink that stuff. Eugh."
Turning to the side, she pulled up a third chair - that would be for Colette when she showed up to help pass out cookies.

He had gotten a short nap in while Ahiru, in her boundless energy, was off at the store getting boxes and a cart, but after the night that had preceded it, it wasn't nearly enough. Objectively, Fakir knew he would eventually recover from the cookie-making marathon, but it didn't feel like it at the moment.
Not bothered by Ahiru's disapproval, Fakir took another sip of his coffee. "There's nothing wrong with it."

Fakir definitely didn't look well-rested, by any means. But now that all the cookies were set up and ready to be distributed, she didn't know why he decided to stay down here. If he was worried she was going to drop things, that part was over with.
Lifting back up from the table, she made another small disgusted face at the coffee before turning her gaze back on Fakir's face. "You could go rest now, if you want to. We got everything down here and you helped a lot. I know you don't like being around crowds and stuff. I can take it from here."

She made sure to examine the entrance to the building before slowly opening the door and cautiously walking inside. She wasn't familiar with this building, but this was supposedly where most of the others who had been brought here like her were staying. She'd never really had a reason to come until now.
It was fairly easy to spot where she needed to go, given that there were five tables stacked with various sweets. A slight bit of red coming to her cheeks, she walked toward them with as much confidence as she could in these clothes with a scowl. Ran Fan merely stopped at a table next to the one where they were sitting and looked at them.

She pointed between the tables as she listed them off. "There's oatmeal raisin over there, peanut butter right there, sugar cookies are over here, gingerbread next to those, and... chocolate chip cookies are right here with us! Please, take as many as you'd like!"

She followed her pointing with her eyes, taking a few seconds to size this up. The types weren't all that important to her, honestly. Finally, she glanced back at Ahiru suspiciously. "There is nothing you ask for in return?"

And, well, with a war and such going on, Death City isn't what Ahiru would call a cheerful place, by any stretch of the imagination. She'd hoped that free cookies would help bring some smiles and a more positive air about.

"Hello, it's been a while, hasn't it?" he says in a kind voice, giving Ahiru one of his smiles.

"Sei-chan!" she exclaimed happily. "It has been awhile! It's nice to see you!" She eagerly gestured around her at the tables of confectioneries. "Would you like some cookies?"
Reply
"I would love to... hummm" he observes them with a sort of forged excitement "but which should I pick?"

She started gesturing between the tables packed with sweets, one by one. "There's peanut butter cookies over there, and oatmeal raisin next to those..." She turned over to the other side to continue, pointing with her finger. "And over here is the sugar cookies and the gingerbread on the table right by it. And..." Finally, she indicated the table that she and Fakir were standing behind. "These ones are aaaaalllll chocolate chip!"

And then his morning was all the more bearable.
His expression now markedly less sullen, he strode over to where the girl he'd spoken to the day before over the communicator was sitting. He inclined his head slightly in greeting, adding quietly, "Morning, Ahiru." Stealing a quick glance at the man beside her, he slightly rose his eyebrows in silent question. Your partner, I assume?

Strange, she thought he seemed sorta familiar. And no sooner had she thought that than the same person stepped back into view. Her eyebrows rose, eyes widening in recognition as he approached her table.
Ahiru beamed with a wave of her hand at the familiar face that she had talked to via the device the night before. "Hi, Vergil! You're here for the cookies, right?" She gestured all around her to the five tables, two on each side and the ones she and Fakir were sitting at in the middle. "Take as many as you like!"
She almost considered nudging Fakir to get him to say hello or something, but thought better of it. He'd probably just get grumpier and shoot her a dirty look or something. Hopefully he'd speak up on his own.

This Vergil had yet to do anything that suggested he might have ill-will towards Ahiru, so Fakir decided to tolerate him. And if he was going to take some of these stupid cookies away, Fakir was willing to welcome him, at least as much as Fakir welcomed any stranger.
So he gave a slight nod, in confirmation of Ahiru's encouragement for the young man to take as many cookies as he wanted.

Uncharacteristically, not that either of them knew him well enough to know it to be so, he shared a half-smile. "Of course, but are you sure?" He knew that if that were the case, he'd no doubt be back in his lunch break to swipe more. An amusing thought crossed his mind that seemed worth sharing: "You may want to set some kind of limit, otherwise I may be back in a couple of hours with a wheelbarrow." Glancing along the tables, he noticed then that the table between them held particularly larger amounts of chocolate chip than the other flavours ( ... )

Almost as soon as the question is out of his mouth, it occurs to him that perhaps the girl merely can't speak. Maybe she's deaf. She doesn't seem like someone likely to cause harm, anyway, and if she were, pretending to be unable to speak would be a very unusual way to do it.
A bit awkwardly, he leans forward to peer at the device. A simple question with an obvious answer. He draws back again, and nods.

The redhead read over them quickly and then smiled at her, showing what she hoped was a much more pleasant and less grouchy face than Fakir's. "Of course you can! That's what they're here for!"
She gestured around to the other tables, still beaming. "Each one has the names of the cookie on a little sheet in front! Take as many of any and every kind as you like!"
