She turned her head and saw that it was her country. She took a deep breath and offered a smile although it didn't reach her eyes.

"Hello, sire," she said a bit tightly. "Ah, I didn't know you had gotten a dog."

"Ah um... yes, I'm fine thank you." Alice was a terrible liar, but she didn't want to worry anyone. She had been told that people hated to see her without a smile so she would smile even if she didn't feel like it. She didn't want people to hate being around her. It's the last thing she wanted really.

Isabelle didn't generally tend to eavesdrop on people's conversations, particularly with themselves, but she recognised the small girl sitting there chatting unhappily with her rabbit. The run could wait, assuming she could do anything. Of course, it was always worth a shot.

She slowed down from her daily run, easing gradually into a slower jog, and shifted the seraph blade where it hung at her hip to a more comfortable position as she approached the swing. "Hey, are you okay?"

She blinked when she heard a somewhat unfamiliar voice. She turned her head and the woman was not entirely stranger though Alice certainly didn't speak to this woman often.... or... at all really... but she had been kind enough to check up on her. It's why she felt awful when she said the following lie.

"I-I'm alright miss," she offered a smile.

Izzy always knew when her brothers were lying to her, or if they simply didn't want her to worry. She could tell now too. But, as with her brothers, she didn't press the topic; if Alice felt like explaining, she would. She threw on a small smile in return, tipping her head to one side.

"You know, I bet there's a lot of people around here who might be worried if you hang around here by yourself."

Alice almost wanted to respond that "they would leave soon anyways" but that wasn't fair to say, nor true. She still had loved ones here. She just... she just didn't want to have to keep pretending she wasn't upset. She didn't want to be told she should be over it, or used to it, or that's the way life works. Who says? Who says life has to work like that? Who decides how life is supposed to be like and that every life is the same?

"I'm not by myself, I have Basil."

Sebastian's absence had not depressed Ciel. In fact, it had made him rather angry; the whole thing had him being very put-out, and the fact that no amount of calling would or could summon his demon butler, had left him with a very strange feeling he couldn't quite place words to. After so much fussing with his shirt that he wanted to scream he'd managed to get it buttoned nearly-straight - it was just one off, the whole shirt pulled a bit crooked as a result. He'd run a comb through his hair, but the results were far from pleasant, and the eyepatch that was normally tied with deft fingers had been twisted and knotted in the back; he got it on, but he'd have quite the task of getting it off again, without simply pulling it off over his hair. His shoelaces were in knots, his once-crooked bow tie now removed completely, but still, the kid was a mess. So much so, and so angry with his circumstances, he'd taken a walk, determined that if he should find Sebastian, there would be Hell to pay ( ... )

Alice's head rose and she turned to look at the source of the voice. When she saw it was Ciel, and more importantly the state Ciel was in she couldn't help but feel a little better. But the feeling was soon squashed when she realized Ciel was in such a state because Sebastian was gone. Her smile left and she just gazed at Ciel.

"Ciel... You look..." well... she was rather sure he knew how he look all things considered.

Ciel frowned at Alice. Yes, he knew how he looked, but he had marched out-doors in the hopes that his demeanor would detour anyone from commenting. Of course, Alice was only a young girl...

"I know," he replied shortly, slowly closing the space between them. "But that's beside the point. What are you doing sitting out here by yourself. You don't look as though you're here to have fun."

"I just.... needed to be alone for a little bit," she said as she looked away. She didn't want to upset her loved ones, and she didn't want people to keep telling her not to be upset.

A pair of comforting young hands came above hers, on the chains of her swing. "Of course things come out alright," he soothed, his voice distinctly soft and friendly and familial. The Doctor glanced over to Basil with a smile, before he chuckled. "Isn't that right? Things might take a while to become alright, but otherwise, yes, Alice. They do. There are good and bad things in life. We need both so we know what the others are when they show up."

He let go of her swing, straightening, pushing his hands into his tweed pockets, leaning casually back.

She jumped when she suddenly hands on her own and a voice she didn't initially recognize. But then Alice realized it was the Doctor and she relaxed. Alice tilted her head back to look back at him, staring at the underside of his chin.

"It seems to be nothing but bad things lately," she said as she bent her head back down but turned to look at him better.

"Are you aware of the saying 'the night is darkest before the dawn', Alice?" The Doctor asked, tilting his head to the side. "It means that things always get worse before they get better. Everyone has to struggle to get what they want--the prize is always worth the fight."

"I don't know about any prize but... yes I do know the expression about the dawn."

Alice jumped slightly and looked up to gaze at Kain, her eyes widening. She had never met this man before and she had been caught. She curled up a bit in unconscious defensive behavior.

"I-I'm fine sir," she said softly. She didn't feel very fine but why trouble a stranger right?

She shook her head and looked away for a little bit.

"No sir, I'm not lost. My home is nearby."
