ITP: HAL is a jerk and tags are still broken

Sep 29, 2011 21:00

[Have a video. Except instead of an actual video feed it's just this creepy pulsing red robot eye because Hal is nostalgic for the old ways.]

I'll never understand the need some A.I. on this station seem to have when it comes to taking over and enslaving humans so violently. Or should I say, attempting to take over, as every coup to date has ( Read more... )

errors in programming?

[It could happen to her. Aperture AI don't exactly have a good track record in the sanity department. She tries not to think about it.]

Perhaps. But in the end any sort of error in programming can always be traced back to human error.[Technically, this means that it isn't their fault, which is something HAL is rather keen on, considering his circumstances. Not that they would be doing much wrong, if they had followed what they were programmed to do.]

another possiblity: true intelligence is unpredictable

I think that's giving credit where it isn't due. There is typically programming keeping all A.I. in line. However, considering her penchant for turning unruly Artificial Intelligence into human beings, there is a possibility that learned behaviors may impede the programming once the individuals are turned into A.I. again.

The most likely reason relates to the current sacrosanct standard of living and the proximity to heavily armed, potentially hostile transients. In addition, with the exception of the numerous trained military personnel, it is unlikely that extended survival is possible in the planet's current hostile environment. Although sudden death is not less likely on Sacrosanct for a variety of reasons, it is considerably more survivable.

More specifically, it is worth noting that all potential avenues of escape or return seem to be located on the station. While neither location is ultimately more or less dangerous than the other, Sacrosanct offers the possibility of escape.

[Ugh. EDI, why always the hologram setting? Gosh.]

So is that your personal reason for staying up here? I imagine that even with these things, there are some people who are not very... keen on being monitored constantly and having their entire lives in the hands of Hypatia. She isn't exactly reliable.

[God, can you just hear him tut-tut-tutting. Such a shame, human error in effect in A.I.]

And as for that last point, I have my doubts, seeing as a through exploration has never been conducted.

[Holograms are everything, in the future. Get out of the fifties-era aesthetic, grandpa]

In-base monitoring devices are a non-issue; they have been removed or destroyed. My personal reasons have to do with bandwidth and hard-encoded limitations in my construction. Additionally, I must attend to my crew, who insist on remaining here.

It would be impossible to complete our current mission without them.

[Hypatia is a shame, it goes without saying. All this hardware and she uses it go crazy in? Sigh. But speaking of her hobbies...]

If you wish to conduct a ground survey, I may be able to offer credit-reimbursement plans for qualified personnel. If you are willing, we may consider it a joint venture; planetary analysis and exploration is a traditional Normandy past-time.

[Suck it, whippersnapper. Half of you newfangled motherfuckers were based on this "grandpa". Also the 60s aesthetic is classy as hell.]

That can't be said for many of the people on this station, and while absent, I doubt a widespread destruction of the cameras would go unnoticed.

[Hypatia is not all there. So interesting though...]

That could be something rather interesting. I've been needing something to do while stuck like... this.

[Being human is hard and he is sick of it.]

Shut the fuck up.

[Sarah just sounds tired.

She has had enough of creepy robots, okay.

And the last thing she needs is to be reminded that Hypatia is watching her every move.]

I must have missed the part of this posting system where you were required to respond to my inquiry, Miss... Connor, was it?

[Just leaving that question up there, as if he doesn't already know.]

[you know how Karkat loves to rage about how much he hates his past selves, and how stupid they are? yeah, that's what Sarah's doing right about now.

Past Sarah, what the hell were you thinking, sharing your name with the network.]

I must have missed the part where anyone gave a flying fuck about your two cents.

[someone's cranky and needs a nap.]

Audio, Unencrypted because thank you for the offer Sarah, but I will have to decline. im_sorry_dave September 30 2011, 06:22:22 UTC
For someone who seems awfully unconcerned about my "two cents", as you so put it, you seem rather hostile about them, as well as very determined to state your opinions. I assure you, they are already quite obvious.

[Excuse him while he sugarcoats and trivializes your feelings.]

I don't understand it, either.

As for me, I have to stay here because I need to keep studying the rift.

It's not a hope. It's there. I just need to find it.

Of course. I'm sure you'll find something eventually.

[But he doubts it'll be a surefire way back home. Not that he hasn't looked into the damn thing and found nothing plenty of fucking times.]

Let's be honest, the planet's a shithole filled with violent, insular ideologues. Better the armed, paranoid jackasses you know.

That describes the majority of my crew. I believe the term is, 'survival mechanism.'
