ITP: HAL is a jerk and tags are still broken

Sep 29, 2011 21:00

[Have a video. Except instead of an actual video feed it's just this creepy pulsing red robot eye because Hal is nostalgic for the old ways.]

I'll never understand the need some A.I. on this station seem to have when it comes to taking over and enslaving humans so violently. Or should I say, attempting to take over, as every coup to date has ( Read more... )

errors in programming?

[It could happen to her. Aperture AI don't exactly have a good track record in the sanity department. She tries not to think about it.]

Perhaps. But in the end any sort of error in programming can always be traced back to human error.[Technically, this means that it isn't their fault, which is something HAL is rather keen on, considering his circumstances. Not that they would be doing much wrong, if they had followed what they were programmed to do.]

another possiblity: true intelligence is unpredictable

I think that's giving credit where it isn't due. There is typically programming keeping all A.I. in line. However, considering her penchant for turning unruly Artificial Intelligence into human beings, there is a possibility that learned behaviors may impede the programming once the individuals are turned into A.I. again.

experience suggests even programmed bounds are flexible

What experience?

[Come, Chellbot, sit on Grandpa Hal's lap and tell him the story of your people.]

[It'll be a very vague story. She doesn't know him well enough to give the details.]

murdering Her programmers

That could be justified, with the right programming. I am not sure it qualifies as acting outside of restraints.

[Hal would know about these things...]

measures were implemented specifically to prevent that

Poor measures, if it managed to happen anyway. What cause would an A.I. have to kill programmers. Did they interfere in a mission?

I don't know

[She can guess, but that's none of HAL's business anyway.]

[GOD CHELLBOT.
Now all you get is a thoughtful humming noise.
This is going to bother him all day.]
