If there was one thing that Kanda hated more than working with other people, it was doing nothing at all. That, as it happened, was one of the lessons he had learned in Rivelata-he'd never before had nothing to do. There were always missions to go on and training in anticipation of them. Here he still trained, but his eventual plan to leave when he finally found a way to have Mugen reforged notwithstanding, the immediacy of action was missing.

So if he had to tolerate working with others in order to feel like he was actually doing something, fine. And as far as people he might be working with went, the woman who had organized this outing (Kanda hadn't bothered to ask her name or to give his own) seemed more tolerable than most-at least she didn't want to seem to make idle talk. And anyway, it would give him a chance to learn something of this jungle that he'd been told was full of so many dangers. Though at the moment, the most pronounced of those seemed to be the vile stench of rot and death ( ... )

Kaiman, however, was used to this sort of work. He frequently dragged foul smelling corpses around. When it came to dealing with those bastard magicians, the bodies were usually rotted and disfigured.

Most unpleasant.

But, the large man had his gas mask, which served a dual function; hiding his scaly face as well as blocking out the smells and pathogens rising from the dead.

He stuffed his hands in his pockets, humming cheerfully as he made his way through the jungle, voice muffled by the leather mask on his face.

The smell of the river hit him before the sight did. Even through his gas mask, the odor of decay was almost unbearable. He gagged as he approached the pair. Unlike Kanda and Selene, Kaiman was a very chatty person, especially when he was working ( ... )

Selene glanced over at Kanda as he approached, taking note of his silence and deciding not to disrupt it. People all had their own way of going about things, and she wasn't about to force him into conversation if he wasn't keen on it. What kind of pleasantries would there be to exchange anyway? 'Hi, I'm Selene, thank you for stopping by to help me drag rotting corpses out of the river tonight.' It hardly sounded like any kind of proper conversation, not that Selene had ever been much for proprieties, but she decided against it anyway ( ... )

Kanda had watched Kaiman's arrival with a hard stern expression, ready to be irritated by his pleasant attitude just because he hadn't found anything else to be immediately irritated by. But as it turned out that, in this case, good-naturedness apparently didn't mean incompetence, as it did with so many, he would just have to funnel that energy into the task at hand. Probably it was for the best ( ... )

Kaiman looked to Selene. Wow, she had neat eyes. "Uh, just a little bottle. It's in one of my pockets." He grinned a little, embarrassed. "I don't have much money, you see. I'm trying to save what I have for a place to stay. Hahah... the streets aren't very comfortable ( ... )
