If there was one thing that Kanda hated more than working with other people, it was doing nothing at all. That, as it happened, was one of the lessons he had learned in Rivelata-he'd never before had nothing to do. There were always missions to go on and training in anticipation of them. Here he still trained, but his eventual plan to leave when he finally found a way to have Mugen reforged notwithstanding, the immediacy of action was missing.

So if he had to tolerate working with others in order to feel like he was actually doing something, fine. And as far as people he might be working with went, the woman who had organized this outing (Kanda hadn't bothered to ask her name or to give his own) seemed more tolerable than most-at least she didn't want to seem to make idle talk. And anyway, it would give him a chance to learn something of this jungle that he'd been told was full of so many dangers. Though at the moment, the most pronounced of those seemed to be the vile stench of rot and death.

Arms folded inside his sleeves, Kanda stepped up onto the bridge, which seemed to approximate the appointed meeting place, and grimaced, clenching his jaw against the reflexive spasm of disgust at the view below. It might have been made more lurid by the dim light of the moon filtering down through the canopy of leaves to glint like pale frosting off the water and patches of bloated flesh, but really, the scene was grizzly enough that even the moonlight was hard pressed to improve on it.

He stopped alongside the woman and breathed an audible snort of disgust at the scene below, but otherwise spoke no greeting to her.
