One of the updates I'd been thinking about making to my kit was a larger aumônière that would fit my wallet, keys and digital camera, as my small version that's mostly accurate for 14th century London isn't exactly large enough to conceal all these items at once. My table linens project ideas have come to fruition, and I have put together what I think is a really pretty linen tablecloth for use with our feast gear. I've decided that I need to upgrade our feast gear linens, which is a bit problematic. I've been using obviously-modern cotton as tablecloth and napkins--hemmed, at least--because I'm totally okay with getting food all over them and then tossing them in the machine to wash. The original cap was pleated down to 2 or 3 cm (depending upon the side) with 1 mm pleats 2-3 mm deep. It was here I hit a proper snag. It would probably have been easier to have pleated here without the edge being hemmed, and I could have gotten my pleats smaller had I unpicked that seam, as the bulk of the hemming kept the fabric from getting ( Read more... )

As of yesterday morning, I still found the weaving part of the interlaced insertion stitch pretty terrifying, but I think I've worked it out. This seam has been a learning process, but as the embroiderer of Birgitta's Cap missed stitches, too, I didn't feel too much pressure to create perfection.
