Thank you--and I'm glad someone who fences likes it, because it's meant as yet another giveaway for the By the Book tourney.

What sorts of things have you carved? (And is it a matter of finding something sufficiently interesting to carve, or is it the process that you find meh?)

I've done relief carving in various media, and I don't mind it, but I think we have different ways of focusing that would influence that difference.

What projects have you done?

The pattern came from Renaissance patterns for lace and embroidery; an unabridged facsimile of the 'Singuliers et nouveaux pourtraicts' of 1587.

Instructions came from the Tournaments Illuminated article I mentioned a couple posts ago and Arienne Ashford, which wasn't exactly complete, but she explains step-by-step a few of the patterns found in Vinciolo. Between the two of them, I got *most* instructions necessary for this project, but I still had some trouble. As an example, neither really talked about how you couch the threads down while you're actually working the pattern, so I couldn't really be bothered to commit trial-and-error before I even had the basic skill down, hence my worry over the wibbledy bits. I would actually recommend beginners try to find other, more complete resources, rather than those I had available.

Wow, that is lovely. Even if you don't particularly enjoy doing it. :-D

:) A couple hours ago, I found someone's chart of the blackworked cuffs in Holbein's 1537 portrait of Jane Seymour, and my monkey brain has had a MIGHTY NEED for counting projects, so I've already started it!

Thank you, though.

process pics come out, I'd wager that I too would find reticella a less than enjoyable craft. Thanks for sharing so I won't actually go trying this myself.

And counting projects...I totally suck at counted stitch anything. Except maybe for crochet, but even there, I refuse to do anything uber complex.
