Every few years, I try to update my apron dresses to make them more historically accurate. This time I've gone with some relatively simple updates to my grey-black dress, all incorporating the concept of reinforcing edges with cords--a sewing technique found in Danish, Swedish and Norwegian Viking textiles.

Am currently making measuring strings in the 3 Viking metrologies discussed by Ulf Alström: Ravning Enge (29.6 cm/unit), Trelleborg (29.33 cm/unit) and Norway (31.63 cm/unit). Am making them each 4 units long, as the Vikings seem to have used these units frequently in groups of 3, 4, 6, and 12 (the Vikings seem to have functioned in base-12). ( Read more... )

I normally make ankle-height naalbinded socks, because that's how high the Coppergate and Uppsala socks are. Has anyone tried making the knee-high 12th century version?

My table linens project ideas have come to fruition, and I have put together what I think is a really pretty linen tablecloth for use with our feast gear.
