Luke had always been hands-on in his work as a bar owner/manager. He had a lot of staff, but he knew every single one of their duties and always helped out if needed, whether it be taking drink orders, pulling beers, collecting glasses, cleaning toilets... whatever was needed. It was a way to kill two birds with one stone, really. It kept him him touch with all his staff with knowledge of that they did, and kept the bar running smoothly. Today was no exception, and being a Saturday, they had a busy social crowd in for a few drinks and some good music, before the place would likely explode the evening round. Aiden's publicity had been immaculate and the bar had been popular from the minute it opened. Hospital and university staff were constant patrons, as well as students and out of town visitors to both facilities. They were already operating on a profit, something very few businesses had the luxury of declaring in their first month of operation
( ... )
Tab had been stuck behind the bar most of the night, only just managing to get out from behind it for a quick trip to the loo, and to grab a drink of her own. She loved it when she was busy, and she almost loved being behind the bar as much as she loved being up on the stage.
There were times she wished that the act up on the stage was her, and not some other musician, but the twinges of jealously were short-lived because she could enjoy the atmosphere just as well from the bar. She also enjoyed the looks on people's faces when the tiny redhead could give back as much as she got.
Tab had a quick look around to check on everything, and spotted her husband talking to a guy with a baby capsule. It took her a moment to register that it was Andrew, and Tab ignored the bar in favour of finding out what was going on with Luke's cousin. "Hey," she greeted both of them as she managed to manoeuvre between two large men carrying pints.
Andrew swallowed as he glanced between then both, and then beyond them into the bar. "You're busy. I should..." He pointed behind him towards the door and took a step away, ready to bolt again. He couldn't do it, though. He turned back to them with a helpless look, clutching the capsule in his hand like a lifeline. "I just thought..." be began, but didn't know how to finish, because truth was, he hadn't thought much at all.
Luke knew something was wrong, and it was only one minor detail that alerted him to it above anything else - Andrew didn't smile in greeting. He always did. Plus he was in Princeton unannounced, with Jamie and without Ali. He considered for a moment that he should offer to take the baby off his cousin, but Anrew had such a grip on the capsule his knuckles were white. "Come to my office," he told him without hesitation, taking Tab's hand so she knew to come with them and started weaving through the crowds to the back of the bar. Even though Tab probably wasn't used to family crisis beyond Riley, she was his wife and he needed her... and he suspected Andy might need her too. Luke was thinking the worst possible scenarios, of course. If the shit was about to hit the fan in some way, he was going to need Tab to help him help Andy through it.
