Ovarian Cysts

May 12, 2011 10:50

I just found out I am pregnant a week ago (I'm almost 5 weeks), and when I went to my OBGYN to get a blood test to confirm, she wanted to have me get an u/s to make sure that everything looks normal at this point (I had a very small bit of spotting).  Today I got my u/s and they found that I have a large cyst on my left ovary.  The doctor said that ( Read more... )

Basically, there's nothing you can do to keep it from rupturing, really, but keeping off your feet and lot lifting heavy objects can help keep it from getting it more inflamed and making it more likely to rupture. That's the advice I was given back in December when I had an ovarian cyst (was not pregnant - just PCOS).

In essence, though, it will rupture or it will not - you can help a little but you can't keep it from rupturing if it's going to do so anyway. That said, having it rupture doesn't automatically mean losing the pregnancy, so...there's no point in stressing too much over it, if you can help it.

From what I understand, it's not uncommon to get a Corpus Luteum cyst during pregnancy, and it can rupture, but that it does not mean it will threaten (or prevent) a pregnancy. I had one rupture when I was about 8 weeks pregnant with #2, and though I was in agony for a week the pregnancy was just fine (though I got a good scare!).

I've had an ovarian cyst for my entire pregnancy so far (I'm 14w at the moment). In fact, we discovered it a month before I conceived. My doctor has never mentioned to me that it might be a problem if it were to rupture. Nor has she mentioned it having anything to do with my hormone levels. Whenever I ask about it she pretty much just dismisses it as a being something I don't need to worry about.

Maybe you have an unusual kind of cyst? A type that could cause a problem? I agree that there might not be much you can do about it other than take it easy and try not to worry.

This.

I only found out I was pregnant because I was having really bad pain in my left ovary. I thought it was Aunt Flo, but after a week of pain and no period, I tested and voila: Pregnant. I ended up going to the ER thinking it might be ectopic, but they did an US and found out it is just a cyst causing the pain. I was told not to worry about it and that it wasn't a concern. Currently 24w6d and my cyst has not been an issue.

Thanks for this! I wish my doctor wasn't so doom and gloom - he really freaked me out. It really helps me to know that everything can turn out alright even if it does rupture.

Can they even diagnose whether it's a luteal cyst or just a regular cyst? If it's a regular cyst, which may have been there already, I don't think there's anything to worry about. I guess it's a possible scenario in case of a luteal cyst, but can they tell which type it is?

I want to say that they think it's a luteal cyst because it's the only cyst I have on my ovaries.

I had the same thing right around the same time. I was in terrible pain at the end of my 4th week and went to the ER to rule out an ectopic. Of course, it was too early, but they did several ultrasounds and palpated my stomach pretty vigorously. As a result, they burst the cyst. It was bit uncomfortable having extra fluid in my stomach and they kept me in the hospital for several hours to make sure that I wasn't bleeding internally, but it turned out to be of no consequence to the pregnancy. In fact, no doctor ever connected the two to me. I went for an ultrasound 3 days later and they saw a healthy uterine pregnancy and a shrinking cyst ( ... )

Thank you! You didn't scare me at all, it helps to be reassured that if it does rupture, everything can turn out ok. I've had a cyst rupture before so I know the kind of pain it causes, but as long as the baby will be ok, I don't mind :)

TBH, a friend of mine has had cysts (not sure if they were the same kind) and she describes the pain as intolerable. Mine certainly wasn't pleasant, but I don't remember needing anything stronger than the regular OTC painkiller for it. I was just so gleeful that it wasn't an ectopic that I probably would have tolerated anything, and I'm a wuss.
