The surest sign, to me, that I am leaving a place:

the kitchen is bare, and the spices are gone.

I still have a few spices left. A very few. They are hanging out in the much-bared corner of my shelftop, looking all Pico Why Were Our Compatriots Taken From Us.

Is it sad that I feel empty without my tiny bottles of mint and almond extract?
