GL - Movie Night - Part 36

Oct 17, 2009 22:35

Title: Movie Night
Author: critic2000
Pairing: Olivia/Natalia
Rating: PG-13 to start, for violence (non-sexual) and language. I am not any kind of a medical expert so if there are some glaring errors, please forgive me.
Disclaimer: I don’t own the Guiding Light characters, they belong to CBS and Proctor and Gamble.
Summary: This is set in the spring of 2009. I’ve taking some liberties with the storyline, mainly Natalia never slept with Frank, hence no engagement etc. So our girls have been just continuing forward raising Emma and getting closer to each other though they are still technically just friends, but that will change… This is a hurt/comfort story so they are headed on a rough ride.
Author’s Note: This is my first fan fiction so please be gentle. This would not have been possible if not for the persistent nudging and awesome editing of my beta/great friend croftlara. Comments are welcome.

Chapter 36

They arrived at the home Jeffrey shared with Reva just as the older woman was getting ready to put dinner on the table and had begun to wonder where her husband and their reluctant houseguest were.

When the door opened Reva stood facing them with her hand on her hip and for a moment looked said houseguest up and down, she looks tired but there’s something else, something in her eyes; hope? “You’re late.” Reva addressed both Jeffrey and Olivia.

“We just had to stop by The Beacon, sorry if we’re late.”  Jeffrey walked in carrying Natalia’s bag, putting it down so he could kiss his wife.

“Well dinner is ready, while I get it on the table both of you go and get cleaned up, you’ve been in a hospital I can only imagine what germs you’re covered in.”

Olivia eyebrows shot up but she said nothing and picked up Natalia’s bag and took it to her room before washing her hands thoroughly and going back to the dining room.

“Is there anything I can give you a hand with Reva?”  Raising her hands she added, “Now one hundred percent germ free.”

“Right,” came the sardonic response. “Actually, if you want to get the salad from the fridge, I’d appreciate it.”

Olivia made a quick trip to the kitchen for the salad and placed it on the table.

Reva was cutting the lasagna.  “Have a seat Olivia, I’m sure Jeffrey will just be a second.”

Olivia nodded and sat then put her napkin in her lap while Reva asked, “So did your appointment with Rick go well?”

“Umm…well…yeah,” Olivia looked up at Reva. “Actually, he said I’m improving and apparently my brain isn’t too terribly scrambled.” After you slapped me last night, deserved or not.

Reva touched Olivia’s arm and smiled, “That’s really wonderful.”

Olivia looked down at the hand on her arm.  Okay what’s with the weird act, I know you’re not happy with me? “Yeah, it’s good.”

Reva removed her hand from Olivia’s arm and sat down across from her as Jeffrey entered the room.  “Come sit down before it gets cold.”

Jeffrey sat next to his wife as they all began passing around the lasagna and salad that Reva had made.  Jeffrey took a bite of lasagna, “Mmm this is really good Reva.”

“Thanks.”  Reva answered.

This has nothing on Natalia’s lasagna.  Oh well better be gracious. “Yes, it’s lovely Reva,” Olivia said while taking another bite.

“Oh thank you Olivia,”  Reva said sarcastically.

Jeffrey watched both women not sure of what to expect.

To her credit and both Jeffrey and Reva’s surprise, Olivia let it go.

“How was Natalia today?” Reva genuinely asked.

Swallowing her fork full of salad Olivia perked up, “Actually she was great today. She walked again and was able to get further down the hall than yesterday, with less pain.”

“I’m glad,”  Reva smiled.  “She wasn’t too tired today or anything after being awakened in the night?”

Olivia dropped her fork and it clanged loudly against the plate.

Jeffrey quietly disapproved, “Reva.”

“What?  Just asking about Natalia.”  And playing with you a little bit for hitting and threatening me.

“Is there something you want to say to me?”  Olivia asked without raising her voice.

“Just wondering if there will be anymore nightmares tonight?  Should I come and wake you wearing Shayne’s old football helmet in case you decide to hit me again?”  Turning to Jeffrey who had put down his fork, “We really should dig that and the hockey pads out of the attic while Olivia’s staying.”

Olivia threw her napkin on the table and pushed her chair back, the sound of wood scraping over the floor was the only sound in the cabin.  She stood and addressed Reva, “I’m sorry for last night, I really am, it won’t happen again.”  She turned and walked back to her bedroom slamming the door for effect.

Jeffrey put his hands on the table. “What is wrong with you?”

“I don’t know, maybe I’m a little tired and sore today.”

“Reva, she feels bad enough about last night, she doesn’t need you adding to that pressure.”

Reva lowered her head. “Arrrg…  I know, I know, I’m a bitch.”

“I didn’t say anything of the sort.”

“No but I am.  I guess I’m just so used to pushing her buttons.”  Her words trailed off and she shrugged her sore shoulder, “What can I say, I do what comes naturally.”

“Well are you going to fix it or am I?”  Jeffrey asked.

“Fine, I’ll go and apologize.”  Reluctantly Reva rose from her chair and went to Olivia’s room.  She knocked and waited for an answer before opening the door.

When the quiet, “Yes?” came from the room Reva opened the door and peeked around the corner in case a lamp were to come flying at her head. She found Olivia sitting on the edge of the bed with her hands safely in her lap.

“I’m sorry.  I shouldn’t have said that,” Reva offered.  “Come back and finish your dinner.”

“Actually I’m really not very hungry tonight,” Reva opened her mouth to protest when Olivia continued, “I had a big lunch.”  Olivia added, “You know that I really am sorry about last night, right?”

“I know you are,” Reva quickly responded, “and I really don’t think it’s your fault, you’ve been through a trauma and your brain is just trying to make sense of it. I get that, I’ve been through enough hell in my life to have more disturbing dreams than I could possibly count, you know we both have.  I’m not judging you for it but you know me, I guess I just can’t help myself… when it comes to it I like to try to push you.”

Olivia looked up at the honest explanation, “Okay.”  She forgave her with that one word, she understood Reva, their relationship and how being snarky with each other on the surface was a big part of it while underneath, there was a mutual respect.

“Great.  Come back and finish your lasagna, I’ll even warm it up for you,” Reva said happily.

“Ahh, I think I’ll pass actually, it’s just not that good.”  Olivia responded straight-faced.

Reva laughed heartily, “Okay, well do you want to at least come and sit with us?  There’s chocolate cake for dessert,” she added to sweeten the deal.

“Yeah alright.  Can’t pass up chocolate.”  Olivia stood and followed Reva back to a nervous Jeffrey.

The night passed slowly while Olivia waited for her calls, first from Phillip then from Jane.  His call had come around seven-thirty. Emma was off playing with her half-siblings, Lizzie and James but he said he was about to take her back to Jane’s so she need not worry.  Olivia had worried of course, especially since she wasn’t able to talk to Emma at the time, something about her hiding and it wouldn’t be fair if he spoiled her hiding place.  So she sat in front of the T.V. with Reva and Jeffrey and alternated between watching them chat with each other, looking at the clock and glancing occasionally at the latest battle of the Iron Chef on the Food Network. Finally, as it was nearly nine and she still hadn’t heard from Jane, she stood from the couch and announced she was going for a walk.  I don’t want to call and make it look like I don’t trust them, I’ll go for a short walk, then if I still haven’t heard anything, I’ll call.

“Wait.”  Jeffrey looked up at Olivia.  “Why don’t I come with you?”

Olivia looked at Reva then at Jeffrey, “No, I think I can walk down to the main road and back on my own.”

“It’s dark out.”

Olivia made a point of looking out the window before sarcastically commenting, “Oh my God, you’re right, it’s night and it’s dark. How the hell did that happen?”

She felt two sets of unimpressed eyes watching her as she added, “I’m a big girl, I’ll be fine but if you have a flashlight, I’d appreciate it.”

Jeffrey got up to find the flashlight, tested it to make sure the battery wasn’t dead and then handed it to Olivia. “Don’t go far, stay on the road.”

Taking the flashlight Olivia responded, “Oh and I was hoping for a little night hiking, I’m on the hunt for bats.” She pulled out her Blackberry to make sure it was still on and charged. “I won’t be long, I just need some fresh air while I wait for Jane’s call.  I just can’t sit here any longer.”

She started to put on her jacket when Reva interrupted her.

“It’s chilly out Olivia, you’ll need something heavier, take my coat.”  Reva walked over and got her lined jacket from the closet. As she handed it over she added, “Here, wouldn’t want you to get sick and die, now would we?”

Without word Olivia gave Reva a quick fake smile, took the coat and headed out into the darkness.

Reva looked at Jeffrey, “I’m worried about her. She didn’t say anything to my die comment and she actually took my coat!”

“I’m worried too, but I think she’s just distracted waiting for Jane to call and tell her Emma’s fine.” He took one last look out of the window in the door and could see the flashlight bobbing down the road, wrapping his arm around his wife he lead her back to the couch.

“Jeffrey?”  Reva asked, “Did you like my lasagna?”

***

Olivia was glad that Reva had suggested that she take her coat.  It was spring but the nights were still very cold.  Depositing her left hand in the pocket of the coat to keep it warm, she had slid the cuff of the right sleeve over her right hand so she could still carry the flashlight but cover her hand slightly.  She got down to the end of the road and turned back, the only sound being her shoes crunching on the gravel.  Jane for God’s sake where the hell are you?  Is he still there?  She reached into her pants pocket to check the time on her phone.  Nine-thirty, shit, that’s it, the minute I get back to the house I’m calling.  The thought had barely gotten into her head when she jumped as the phone rang.  Jesus if my heart lasts the day…

“Hello?” Olivia’s heart raced as her breaths came quickly.

“Hi Olivia, it’s Jane.”

“What took you so long?”  The words came out harsher than intended.

“Umm…well…you said to call after Phillip left.  He just left, he was here reading to Emma.” Jane answered, clearly flustered.

Relief allowed her to breathe normally again. “So she’s okay?  Can I talk to her?”

“A..A.Actually, she’s asleep.  Phillip read a few more chapters of ‘Anne of Green Gables’ and she was out by the end of the last one. I’m sorry, did you want me to wake her?”

“No, Jane.” Olivia rubbed the back of her flashlight holding hand across her forehead. “Let her sleep.  Did she seem happy?”  Do I really want to know?  Of course I do, she’s my kid, I want her happy.

“She was very excited, I guess they played ‘Hide and Seek’ in the mansion.  It sounded like she had a lot of fun.” Jane tried not to sound too happy but the little girls’ infectious happiness had gotten to her, so though she had been on alert while Phillip was there, she couldn’t help being thrilled that Emma had had such a great night with her father and that side of her family.

“Okay good. Thanks for calling Jane. So you’ll get her to school in the morning then bring her by the hospital afterward?”

“Of course, we’ll see you tomorrow afternoon.”

Olivia recognized a slight inflection in Jane’s voice so that she was almost asking a question.

“Yes I will see you tomorrow afternoon, I’m not going to come barging over tonight, don’t worry.”

Flustered again Jane said, “I...I’m not worried, you can come whenever you like, I just…”

“Jane, really it’s fine, relax. I’m here for the night, go to bed, I’m sure you must be tired too.”

“Okay, sleep well.”

“You too Jane.  Thanks for calling.”  Olivia pressed the ‘End’ button and put the phone away, releasing a long breath.  She turned back toward the house when she heard a noise off to the right in the woods by the road.  Okay that sounded like a bear growling.  Her heartbeat picked up again even while her head tried to logically tell her there were no bears in this area but still, she picked it up double-time back to the cabin.
