GL - Movie Night - Part 22

Sep 21, 2009 21:16

Title: Movie Night
Author: critic2000
Pairing: Olivia/Natalia
Rating: PG-13 to start, for violence (non-sexual) and language. I am not any kind of a medical expert so if there are some glaring errors, please forgive me.
Disclaimer: I don’t own the Guiding Light characters, they belong to CBS and Proctor and Gamble.
Summary: This is set in the spring of 2009. I’ve taking some liberties with the storyline, mainly Natalia never slept with Frank, hence no engagement etc. So our girls have been just continuing forward raising Emma and getting closer to each other though they are still technically just friends, but that will change… This is a hurt/comfort story so they are headed on a rough ride.
Author’s Note: This is my first fan fiction so please be gentle. This would not have been possible if not for the persistent nudging and awesome editing of my beta/great friend croftlara. Comments are welcome.

Chapter 22

Caffeine.  That thought propelled Olivia through the halls of the hospital toward the cafeteria.  When she reached it, she spotted the coffee instantly and bee lined for it, weaving in and out of patients, visitors and staff with her eyes on the prize.

Olivia was standing impatiently shifting her feet from side to side waiting in line to pay for her large cup of coffee when she noticed the display of chocolate, gum and mints in front of her. Desperately she grabbed two Hershey’s chocolate bars as her backup caffeine and sugar just in case the coffee didn’t do the trick.

She looked around the large room and pondered a place at one of the tables before realizing that sitting was probably not a good idea. Though her feet still hurt from standing by Natalia all night, she needed to keep moving before she fell asleep.

Olivia found herself outside. Maybe some fresh air will wake me up while I call Emma.

Olivia walked over to the bench that she had sat at… was it just yesterday morning?

She gave in and sat down with a sigh, thankful to be off her feet for the moment but worried that she may not be able to get back up.

Wasting no more time she pulled out her Blackberry, which looked like it could use a good charge, and dialed Jane’s number.

Natalia furrowed her brows as she watched Olivia leave and hoped that her friend would be okay alone.

The look was not lost on Lillian.  As the nurse pulled back the sheets on the bed to begin to help Natalia get cleaned up, she gently queried what was wrong.

“Natalia?  Are you okay? “

Without hesitation Natalia responded. “I’m worried about Olivia.  I can tell she’s exhausted.  I don’t think she’s hardly slept since this happened and I’m sure she hasn’t eaten properly. I know her head is bothering her from where she hit the wall but she won’t say anything about it.  I don’t think she even realizes it but she keeps rubbing the bump on her head when she thinks I’m not watching.”  Another thought popped into Natalia’s head.  “Oh my God, she hasn’t had her heart medication!”

“Don’t worry about her meds honey,” Lillian interrupted as she gently washed around the incision area.  “I’ve talked to her about that already, Frank went by the farmhouse to get it and he’s going to bring it with him when he comes to talk to you.  And I have given her some Tylenol for her head, I don’t know how well it’s helping but it’s something.”

Natalia couldn’t help but feel a little jealous that Olivia had spoken to Lillian about something that she hadn’t brought up to herself. “Oh, okay.  I hope the Tylenol has helped too.  I didn’t know she’d mentioned her medication though.”

Lillian looked up from what she was doing, “Well I’m sure she didn’t want you to worry about her.”

“Too late.”

“Let me tell you a little something about our Ms. Spencer.  You probably know this but she puts up a façade.  She doesn’t want you to think that she actually needs you or wants you to worry about her, when she actually kinda likes it.”

Natalia only smiled.  Lillian you really have no idea just how true that is and most people never will.  Natalia counted herself lucky to have gotten past that façade on a few occasions.  What lies on the other side is a bounty of insecurity, love and fear.

Through the remainder of the sponge bath Lillian made small talk and Natalia responded only when necessary.  She found herself suddenly very tired and couldn’t stifle the yawn that crept out.

It didn’t go unnoticed by Lillian, “We’ll be finished here in just a minute, then you can have a nap if you like.”

“Oh Lillian, I’m sorry, I can’t believe I’m so tired, I just woke up!”

“Your body is still recovering from a major trauma honey, it’s going to take time.” Now finished, Lillian fixed the gown back over Natalia and pulled the blanket back up. “Why don’t you just close your eyes?  Frank will be here shortly so you’re best to rest up now.”

Lillian cleared up and started for the door.

“Thank you Lillian, and if you see Olivia out there roaming the halls would you mind sending her back in?”

“Of course, get some rest. We’ll wait to get you up walking until this afternoon.”

***

“Of course, baby.  I did promise you that I’d bring you in to see Natalia.  We’ll see how she’s feeling this afternoon and if she’s not too tired then I’ll have Jane bring you to the hospital.”

Emma’s voice on the other end of the line was anxious, Olivia knew that she was going to have to bring her daughter to see Natalia very soon or the child was going to slip out of Jane’s custody and hitchhike or God only knows what to get here herself.

“Emma.  Please, I swear that Natalia is okay, she wants to see you too but she’s very tired, you will see her soon.”  Placated for now, it seemed, Emma had agreed.  The sound of her quiet “Okay Mommy” through the phone had Olivia audibly sigh in relief.  She hated arguing with Emma especially over something they both wanted.

“Okay Em. I’ll talk to you later alright? Can you please put Jane on for a minute? I love you.”

There was a muffled “I love you” returned before Jane’s voice could be heard on the line.

“Olivia?”

“Jane, you need to make sure that you can see her at all times, I don’t trust that she’s not going to try to escape and make her way down here herself.”

Jane was well aware of Emma’s precociousness and her ability to slip away if she really wanted to go somewhere.  And because she liked her job, especially now considering that things with her boss seemed to be moving in a little more casual direction, she wanted to keep it so she agreed to keep a special eye on the wandering child.

With that task completed, Olivia put away her phone and looked back at the hospital.  As much as she wanted to get back to Natalia, she was just so tired that she didn’t know where the strength to stand would come from.  Just get through the day and then maybe tonight I can sleep in the chair in her room, if her nightmares stay away that is.    I can do this.  It wouldn’t be so bad if my damn head would stop hurting.  All right. Okay, I can do this. Get up go back.  Lillian should be finished with her by now.

Strength mustered, Olivia pulled herself from the bench and headed back toward the hospital, each step feeling like her legs were stuck in quicksand.

Olivia ignored the people wandering around the halls; patients, staff, visitors, nobody mattered except the woman in room 1824.

Still sipping her liquid consciousness, she was nearly to her destination when she noticed Lillian at the nurse’s station ahead.  Good, so she is finished.

As she walked by, Lillian called out to say Natalia was ready for her.  Olivia smiled her thanks and forged ahead, steps lightening as she could see the room down the hall, knowing her friend was waiting for her.

With a slight knock on the door, Olivia announced herself and asked if she could come back in.

Natalia, who had been resting her eyes while she waited, managed a quiet “Yes”.  Her throat now sore again from talking with Lillian.

Olivia entered the room, approached the bed and addressed her friend, “How are you feeling now?”

“Good. Nice to feel clean again.”

Her voice sounded rough to Olivia, she must have talked a lot with Lillian.

“Is your throat sore?  Would you like some ice water?”

Natalia nodded. “Please.”

Olivia poured some water from the jug on the table next to Natalia and pushed the table over the bed enough so it was within reach of the woman on the bed, though still she handed it to the injured woman.

“I called Emma.  She’s really hoping that she can come and see you later today. “

“I’d like that.”

“Why don’t we wait until after Frank comes then we can decide for sure, okay?”

Natalia understood what Olivia was saying.  In case she was too upset from giving her statement.  “I want to see Emma.”

“I know, but…”

“No Olivia,” Voice cracking at the roughness in her throat, Natalia took a sip of her water before clearing her throat, “no ‘buts’, I want to see her today.”  I need to see for myself that Emma’s okay, please understand that because I don’t have the strength to fight with you right now.

Sensing that Natalia wasn’t going to take anything other than ‘okay’ for an answer and not wanting to fight with her, Olivia agreed.  We’ll see… if you’re too tired, I can still veto this decision. Both of you will hate it but I’ll play my mother trump card and say it’s for Emma’s own good to wait.

Olivia paced the room while Natalia tried to close her eyes and rest before Frank’s expected arrival.

A voice so quiet she almost missed it drifted to Olivia’s ears. “Olivia.  Please, stop pacing.  You’re making me nervous.”

Olivia looked over to the bed.  Natalia’s eyes were still closed.   “Sorry.”  Olivia muttered as she looked between the comfortable looking chair and the not as comfortable window ledge.  Choosing the ledge as it was more likely she would stay awake sitting on it, Olivia moved to the window and sat down, resting her head against the wall.

It didn’t take long until heavy breathing could be heard coming from the direction of the bed.  Great, nothing like rhythmic breathing to try to stay awake to.  With a sigh, Olivia closed her eyes against the headache and exhaustion she was fighting.  Just going to close my eyes a second but I am not falling asleep.  I can’t.

‘Sitting on the bench on the porch outside waiting.  But she didn’t know for what.  She just kept watching down the driveway to the road, waiting.  To her right she saw her family playing catch with a football on the lawn.  Emma squealed as Rafe tickled her when she caught the ball, causing it to drop to the ground.  Ava ran over and picked it up and threw it to Natalia who fumbled at first but caught it. Olivia watched them as they laughed and teased.  She saw Natalia turn to her and wave her over but Olivia was rooted to the bench.  Suddenly, the she felt herself being pushed repeatedly.’

“Olivia?”

“Whaaa…?” Olivia’s eyes opened and she tried to focus on the face in front of her while she felt the hand on her shoulder continuing to gently shake her.  “Frankie?”  Damn it.

“You okay?  You looked like you were having a bad dream.”

“Umm.” Lie Olivia, just lie it’s easier than facing it. “No, I’m fine.  Just a bit uncomfortable sitting here.”  Jesus, fucking dream, leave me alone! Okay… calm down.  Olivia noticed her hands shaking so she quickly hid them in her lap and tried to focus on Frank.

Frank couldn’t help the observation that sprang to his lips as he pulled out Olivia’s heart medication from his jacket pocket and handed them toward her. “Here’s your medication and you look like shit by the way.”

Standing up, clearly offended, Olivia was ready to let Frank have it. “Excuse me?”  Happy to have anger replace the fear she reached out and snatched the bottle of pills from him.

Natalia watched the exchange.  Oh Frank don’t push her, she’ll break.  “Olivia, let it go.  Frank leave her alone.”

Two sets of eyes turned toward the bed.  Natalia lay there, concern etched on her face.  “Just stop okay.”

Olivia now forgotten, Frank headed toward the bed. “Sorry.  I didn’t mean to wake you.  How are you feeling?”

Natalia managed a small smile. “Still sore and tired but better.”

Frank sighed, “I’m glad.  And I hate to have to do this but I really need to take your statement.  I promise I won’t push you okay?”

Olivia hovered near the window impatiently watching the exchange.

Natalia answered Frank, “I’ll be fine.”

Frank looked over at Olivia.  “Olivia if you wouldn’t mind, we’ll be a few minutes.”

Olivia looked to Natalia.  “I can stay if you’d like?”  Please let me stay to support and comfort you.

Natalia met Olivia’s eyes and she considered how to address her friend. I can’t let you stay while I talk about this.  I hope you understand.   “Olivia, I’ll be okay, I promise.  Why don’t you go…”

Olivia abruptly interrupted, “I’ll be in the hallway, call me if you need me,” and began to march toward the door stopping only to address Frank.  “You come get me if she needs me.”

Almost out the door, Olivia called back to Frank, “Make sure she has ice water, her throat is still raw.”
