here looks sooooooooo bad lol, the zemeckis flop era continues

finally watched the substance last night and tbh aside from demi moore, the fx/makeup/prosthetic work and the score, i thought it was pretty mid. kinda entertaining at times but more derivative and dumb than anything else, and very french (in a bad way). cannot believe it won best screenplay at cannes when the dialogue reminded me of m night shyamalan at his worst!

One of us (re: The Substance)! Except I disliked it even more than you and was kind of offended by its idiocy.

yeah i found it more laughable than offensive - i don't think it was meant to be a comedy, but who can never be sure! i definitely think the people lauding it as some kind of subversive feminist masterpiece are out of their damn minds lmao

Grotesque body horror film The Substance will compete in comedy/musical category at Golden Globes

(but I certainly think the movie can be labeled a satire, so it's not the worst movie to ever be considered for that category...The Tourist got nominations, after all)

I watched Conclave not knowing much about it and found it super entertaining. It felt like what it must’ve been like to watch like the Firm or Primal Fear in the 90s. Was shocked at how funny it was lol. I wouldn’t say it’s the best movie of the year, but I found it to be a very good time in the theater especially having a really engaged and reactive audience.

Some spoilers

I can’t be the only one who thought of Regina George when Fiennes was handing out those photocopies lol. That entire scene with Isabella’s curtesy and the vape hit was hilarious.

I was raised Catholic but am now atheist but I liked Fiennes’ sermon on the necessity of doubt for faith, I almost said amen in the theater lol.

I’ve seen a lot of discourse about the ending twist, and I felt like it does actually go with the theme of the movie of doubt vs certainty and needing to have faith.

Also, people in my theater guffawed at the reveal just because of how many twists there were. Everyone seemed to enjoy it
overall.

Yeah, I was also very entertained for the reasons you mention, and our audience laughed a lot! However, a little baffled by the awards attention it's gonna get - it felt like a well made drama, but not all that serious ([Spoiler (click to open)]I need a gif of that vape hit for reactions), and none of the acting really stood out aside from Ralph Fiennes, who was good.

Yeah it was really pulpy and felt like a 90s melodrama in the best way. But I liked all of that about it, since it was unexpected. I get what you mean about not being an awards movie, but I think it was well shot, had a good score, and the cast was solid. I do NOT get why there is any talk about Isabella Rossellini though. Not that she was bad but… that’s it? Lol

I really enjoyed Ralph Fiennes [Spoiler (click to open)]particularly when his demeanor and motivations started to change when he thought the papacy was in reach and picked out a name for himself. I liked that it was a quiet role, he did quite a lot with it. I felt like he did very well in portraying the internal conflict in whether he wanted the papacy or not and what his motivations for being a gossip (lol) were without saying much.It sounds like it’s between Brody and Fiennes, and everyone is saying Brody really is *that good*. I would like Fiennes to win as a career Oscar tbh just to make up for not getting one for Grand Budapest but I think Brody will get his second. Especially because ( ... )

Colin Farrell not winning was a travesty. :/

And IA re: Isabella, she was fine, but I will honestly be a little mad if she gets nominated over someone with more than five minutes of screentime!

I watched We Live in Time, idk why I started thinking it was gonna be like a romance sci-fi movie... It was soooooo boring and bland and annoying. Just she completely lost me after a certain thing was revealed.

Also saw the Substance, I loved it? I'm surprised the other people here hated it? I thought it was visually beautiful, had a lot of good themes and references, and I loved them highlighting Demi Moore's "flaws" and all I could think was she looked so beautiful and I felt so much empathy for her? It was just so heartbreaking knowing she didn't see herself that way. I've never even gotten the fuss over Demi Moore in the past, but I really thought she looked stunning in this.

I agree that The Substance was beautiful (the first two acts, anyway...I find it difficult to defend the third act); there was some awesome cinematography and direction.

But while I'm at it, I would like to ask a question that's kind of driving me crazy...[Spoiler (click to open)]What kind of NYE celebration was that supposed to be? I expected something more like New Year's Rockin' Eve. Didn’t Dennis Quaid's character claim it was the most-watched NYE show? If so, why was it done in LA? And assuming it was a network TV show, why were there so many titties?! I can't even remember with certainty if there was a camera, because it seemed so much like a local theatre event. Make it make sense!

I chalked it up to a French person making a movie about America. Some of the cultural details aren't *quite* right. (Like I assumed Elizabeth Sparkle had a house in the hills and then was shocked when they were like, "Oh here's her neighbor, a regular dude living across the hall in an apartment.")

Oh that’s a great point! Maybe it was considered a condo complex versus an apartment building, but a house would’ve make more sense. She also gave a canyon address over the phone, which is appropriate for a rich Angeleno, but that’s not the general area of LA where I’d expect to find condos (more like Hollywood, Westwood, Century City, etc). Great view, though!

Here was 👎, but A Real Pain, Conclave and Memoir of a Snail were all 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. Sadly I fear I will miss Emilia Perez in theaters and will have to settle for Netflix on 11/13, like a PEASANT.

Oh, I can out-peasant you; I was using my friend's Netflix account for years and years but she recently canceled it (in the kindest way, first offering to switch to a lower tier if I was still using it but I didn't want her paying for just me). Anyway, now I have no access lol

(though I do have access at the American Red Cross during platelet donations)

Does anyone have recommendations on Mubi? I signed on for a 7-day trial so I could watch The Substance and I welcome suggestions on what to watch. Decision to Leave is my next priority, and mild interest in The Fall (2006).

Also, not surprised Here didn't do well, the ad I saw looked really boring. I didn't remember the generic title when there was a prompt for it at bar trivia (fortunately one of my teammates knew)

Decision to Leave is one of my favorite movies! It’s very Hitchcock. Should’ve won best foreign film that year.

I don’t have Mubi but am very intrigued by the selections!
