Yeah it was really pulpy and felt like a 90s melodrama in the best way. But I liked all of that about it, since it was unexpected. I get what you mean about not being an awards movie, but I think it was well shot, had a good score, and the cast was solid. I do NOT get why there is any talk about Isabella Rossellini though. Not that she was bad but… that’s it? Lol

I really enjoyed Ralph Fiennes [Spoiler (click to open)]particularly when his demeanor and motivations started to change when he thought the papacy was in reach and picked out a name for himself. I liked that it was a quiet role, he did quite a lot with it. I felt like he did very well in portraying the internal conflict in whether he wanted the papacy or not and what his motivations for being a gossip (lol) were without saying much.

It sounds like it’s between Brody and Fiennes, and everyone is saying Brody really is *that good*. I would like Fiennes to win as a career Oscar tbh just to make up for not getting one for Grand Budapest but I think Brody will get his second. Especially because the last several years none of my picks for best actor have won! (Andrew Scott last year, Colin Farrell before that, Benedict Cumberbatch….)

Colin Farrell not winning was a travesty. :/

And IA re: Isabella, she was fine, but I will honestly be a little mad if she gets nominated over someone with more than five minutes of screentime!
