I hope she will be okay. What a horrifying thing to go through.

And it is better she miss some of her son's childhood than miss his life entirely

ugh, it sucks that she feels 'terrible about missing so much of her son's childhood' but it's not like it was an active choice - she has/had cancer! i wish her a speedy recovery and thank her for sharing this difficult journey.

I heard the story about this and how she came to be diagnosed. I had no idea that mammograms can miss some breast cancer. It's so scary. 😳

Yes! I definitely went down the rabbit hole reading about breast cancer and risk factors after hearing her story. 😓

last year i found out i'm at high risk of breast cancer and because i'm under 40 it was still a struggle to get a mammogram (trying to get in was such an emotionally exhausting experience because do people think i am doing this for fun?!). thankfully i was able to go to the high risk cancer clinic and now every year i have to get a mammogram, a MRI and have a check up at the cancer clinic with a nurse who will do a physical examination. i also don't need to go through the whole long process of fighting to get any of that done too.

mammograms are getting better and apparently, they're developing ai that can detect things that radiologists can't see but sadly i don't think any exam is ever 100% foolproof :(

Damn, that's awful. If I'm reading the article right, she literally only knew about the cancer at all because of getting an MRI that detected masses after her OB-GYN decided her risk profile was high enough? That is fucking terrifying. Like, was she feeling symptoms before that?

I didn't realize she was friends with Jessica St. Clair - that's great she has someone to talk to that's been through it.

this is what scares me about so many cancers, you may never had symptoms until it's like stage 4. i think pancreatic is a big one for that

My dad's cancer was a small cell aggressive lung cancer that they initially thought was a primary renal cancer - no sign on blood tests. It was only after he started losing weight and needing to pee more that they sent him for a renal scan. There was a tumour. He went for more scans, and it was already in his lungs, liver and bones - it started in his lungs, and the kidney tumour was secondary. He had no obvious symptoms before the kidney tumour and by then it was too late:(

I'm glad she's talking about this, and the fact that the cancer was missed during her initial mammogram due to having dense breast tissue is scary as fuck. I got my pumpkins smashed last month and no changes from the year before, so yay! I think the recommended age to get a mammogram should be lowered bcause so many women are getting diagnosed at an earlier age.

"I got my pumpkins smashed"

That's art. And like all great art, I'm stealing it.

I'm 36 and I know no less than 5 women in my age range that have had breast cancer. Hopefully they do lower the recommended age for mammograms

I have dense breast tissue also and insurance refuses to pay for extra testing like a sonogram.
