Matthew McConaughey urged Congress to take action on gun control in the wake of the deadly mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in his hometown of Uvalde, Texas. “These regulations are not a step back. They are a step forward for civil society and the Second Amendment," the actor said in a powerful speech Tuesday at the White House, adding that ( Read more... )

Biden tries to use celebrities the same way Obama did.

So should celebs stay quiet and rely on their money/clout to protect them. Cause they can afford to stay quiet and not concern themselves with us.

I get the criticism of celebs branding and pr-ing for their use. Idk who everyone faves are but they're not talking and if they do....they also benefit from pr same as the unlikeable celebs.

Any celeb speaking out against gun violence is good for the cause regardless of their political leanings. I remember when everyone was shitting on Taylor during the metoo (and I was one of the critics too btw) but when she came out speaking about that DJ who groped her, there was a report of RAINN getting an increase in callers because they felt encouraged to seek help cause their fave pop star spoke out. I'll criticize Taylor up and down all day for her narcissism/media manipulation but I can't deny it helped.

Obama was the first president during social media and tbh I felt he used it really well- every time he'd do something for a non-news site (Buzzfeed, Between Two Ferns, etc) it always always tied back to a policy he was pushing and he got his message across that way to millennials.

i'd love to see more celebs speaking out about gun control actually - that's what will keep this in the news cycle longer.

McConaughey grew up in Uvalde. Of course he would feel some type of way.

Edit: I just read his mother was once a Kindergarten teacher there too.

Always good to have public figures speaking out correctly on this issue but I'm not here for this guerrilla campaign event he's doing. I understand why the administration allowed this to happen. But it could have been some other well known celeb, who hasn't publicly talked about running for office.

But how many well-known celebs were born and raised in Uvalde with a mom who taught elementary school in the town? Another celeb would have looked that much more potentially opportunistic without some sort of more personal connection.

That's a good point but I'm just extremely cynical when it comes to famous celebs changing to be wannabe politicians.

I get it. Since he chose to make his home in Texas and is raising his family there any changes in laws there, and there need to be many since Abbott has essentially removed all restrictions on gun ownership would in theory affect him too which makes him immune to claims of 'carpetbagging' or whatever.

This is a weirdly specific moment/niche that he fits.

This whole thing is clearly heartbreaking, but something that really broke me is that we’re asking for the most sensible gun laws to be passed and we can’t even get those. We’re asking for the bare minimum.

This is an all hands on deck situation (has been for awhile) and I appreciate this. It's interesting, and by that I mean disgusting watching Steve Bannon and Jason Miller characterizing this as a declasse thing to do in the White House press room and immediately try to pivot to a DJT did it better at the NRA event.

This is what we're up against, and if 'Matthew' can reach any of the people in these pro-gun audiences, great because the right-wing opportunist are relentlessly without shame.
