Matthew McConaughey urged Congress to take action on gun control in the wake of the deadly mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in his hometown of Uvalde, Texas. “These regulations are not a step back. They are a step forward for civil society and the Second Amendment," the actor said in a powerful speech Tuesday at the White House, adding that ( Read more... )

“We can’t truly be leaders if we are only living for reelection,” McConaughey said at one point, a reference to the power of the gun lobby. Last week, Rep. Chris Jacobs, a Republican from upstate New York, said he would not run for reelection after facing backlash for voicing support for gun control."

Good that he pointed that part out.

It's like that segment from the Daily Show years ago when John Oliver was a correspondent. They asked the former Australian politician about what his job was and he answered something like "serve my constituents." They asked someone from the US and he immediately goes "get re-elected. Wait..."

And then John Oliver walked into the ocean. And the subject was gun control back then, too

It was just so jarring to hear someone be that blunt about motivation.

That segment was soo good. He even made a gun lobbyist agree with him, but the guy was too stupid to realize it.

He was making an analogy "This country has a lot of pools, so obviously there's gonna be a lot more drowning" and John was like "yeah, that's the point".

I still remember it because the stupidity was just too much.

As someone from a West TX town hate this man but as someone from a West TX town that’s near Uvalde (Del Rio) I am begrudgingly glad he said something because there’s a large contingent of assholes that want him to run for governor (and even president) and I hope this will influence those assholes to realize the damage their “It’s mah freedum to be a ammosexual” has done and will continue to do if something isn’t done ASAP to stop it. That said, my hope of that happening is like the bar is at the earth’s core-level low

Normally I'd agree with you, though Uvalde is his legit hometown so whatever. I wish they'd have invited the mom who jumped a fence to get her kids instead though

McConaughey really talks outta both sides of his mouth. It's certainly a moving statement he made. But. He also made it clear in the op-ed he wrote that he's a supporter of the Second Amendment and is against gun control - he said he sees it as a mandate that can infringe on people's rights. That's why he keeps phrasing the solution as "gun responsibility", because he's willing to make some concessions, but he insists on protecting the Second Amendment at the same time.

I really appreciated his framing around gun responsibility and how he was literally raised shooting guns.

It’s something I ask my dad and brother back in Florida all the time, if y’all are responsible gun owners, wouldn’t you WANT there to be better regulations so people aren’t misusing guns and not treating them with respect as the powerful weapons they are? And I always just get back non responses.
