Matthew McConaughey urged Congress to take action on gun control in the wake of the deadly mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in his hometown of Uvalde, Texas. “These regulations are not a step back. They are a step forward for civil society and the Second Amendment," the actor said in a powerful speech Tuesday at the White House, adding that ( Read more... )

broken clock etc. etc. but I actually do like the way he used the term "gun responsibility" - it's a great rebrand for purple ears.

When he was talking about growing up with his bb gun and graduating to the others, that's exactly what those people need to hear. I grew up shooting clay pigeons in my backyard with my dad, and a LOT of gun owners did the same. Would I give it up for these kids to have their lives back? Absolutely, no question. But I think it's the kind of appeal they need to hear.

I didn’t grow up shooting clay pigeons but a lot of my cousins did. Back before white flight happened in my neighborhood (lol🥴) it was insanely normal to me to hear my mostly female friends/neighbors talk about how their dads finally gifted them their own rifles and now they get to go on hunting trips with him.

And the white flight happened EARLY in my life. I’m talking 6-8 year olds being gifted real guns. Some people have no idea how early gun culture gets ingrained in kids.

So as much as I hate the idea of anything other than an outright ban based on my own principles, I know changing the terminology will sway some of those purple voters to vote on SOMETHING that restricts access to them.

Sen. John Thune on AR-15s: "In my state, they use them to shoot prairie dogs and, you know, other types of varmints. And so I think there are legitimate reasons why people would want to have them." pic.twitter.com/BUJkLf3Apv

this makes me so mad because it's all excuses.

SURELY your constituents can find some kind of pest control other than vaporizing them with AR-15s.

People are not possibly cleaning up the shredded remains of animals on their property. So you have people with automatic weapons and gorey bits of animal in your yard and you want to keep that.

now I KNOW this motherfucker is not trying to pretend that you need to shoot varmints with anything other than a .22 lever action / single shot rifle.

the part where he read about the kids was devastating. Those poor families, I can't imagine having to go through something like that. Jesus.

The stories he told about the kids broke my heart which was already held together with some stretched out elastic. The green Converse with the heart. The self portrait. Those bbs deserved better. All kids deserve better.
