“We can’t truly be leaders if we are only living for reelection,” McConaughey said at one point, a reference to the power of the gun lobby. Last week, Rep. It's like that segment from the Daily Show years ago when John Oliver was a correspondent. They asked the former Australian politician about what his job was and he answered something like "serve my constituents." They asked someone from the US and he immediately goes "get re-elected. Wait..."

And then John Oliver walked into the ocean. And the subject was gun control back then, too

It was just so jarring to hear someone be that blunt about motivation.

That segment was soo good. He even made a gun lobbyist agree with him, but the guy was too stupid to realize it.

He was making an analogy "This country has a lot of pools, so obviously there's gonna be a lot more drowning" and John was like "yeah, that's the point".

I still remember it because the stupidity was just too much.

God I remember that and when he said that Australia's mass shootings stopped after they passed gun legislation the guy just said "whooptie do". And John was just gobsmacked.

I feel like finding a politician who actually cares about his people and not just gunning for re-election is some utopian fantasy.
