Matthew McConaughey urged Congress to take action on gun control in the wake of the deadly mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in his hometown of Uvalde, Texas. “These regulations are not a step back. They are a step forward for civil society and the Second Amendment," the actor said in a powerful speech Tuesday at the White House, adding that ( Read more... )

The testimony of the teacher who watched 11 of his students get murdered and was shot twice and waited over an hour before help arrived...just devastating. He said he will spend the rest of his life trying to affect change.

Edit: he wasn't at this event but has been speaking to news outlets recently.

I saw an interview with him yesterday and it was just... awful beyond comprehension.

I saw that interview and couldn’t stop crying. He lost all of his students. Fucking horrific.

That’s devastating
I hope he has a good support system

I understand the why but the fact that we constantly have to tiptoe around and coddle conservatives is exhausting. We have to be careful of the words we use so the constituents don't get confused and the politicians can't twist it, we have to ask for the bare minimum because it's our best bet at getting anywhere even though we often walk away with nothing. They call others snowflakes but they get to be handled with kids gloves their entire lives and I'm so beyond over it.

i hate that dems have put themselves in the position to be the handlers, the ones with the kid gloves and the tiptoes, giving them the excuse to be ineffectual and reactive. our lives and livelihoods are legitimately in danger and they offer no action plan or leadership beyond tweets and "vote harder!"

More powerful white men like him need to speak out about this. This is the only way to get at least partially through to these pro-gun people.

Please. He is probably friends with many of those pro gun people you speak of.

all the more reason to speak to them - having something brought up by a friend who disagrees is far more likely to get through to people.

He grew up in Uvalde. It's not a stretch to think he's genuinely interested in stricter gun regulation, especially when it has now personally affected him.

And even if this is all a political play (which it isn't) it still doesn't change the fact that society tends to listen to white men the most, so him speaking up is very important and needed at the end of the day. It wouldn't change what I said.

Not perfect, not the call to action I would write, but still a very good speech. And I did listen to the entire thing.

I’m hopefully this can reach more gun owners. They see gun control advocates as just coming for their guns, but when a white male with gun ownership experience gets up there they are going to listen, sad as that is.
