Matthew McConaughey urged Congress to take action on gun control in the wake of the deadly mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in his hometown of Uvalde, Texas. “These regulations are not a step back. They are a step forward for civil society and the Second Amendment," the actor said in a powerful speech Tuesday at the White House, adding that ( Read more... )

Always good to have public figures speaking out correctly on this issue but I'm not here for this guerrilla campaign event he's doing. I understand why the administration allowed this to happen. But it could have been some other well known celeb, who hasn't publicly talked about running for office.

But how many well-known celebs were born and raised in Uvalde with a mom who taught elementary school in the town? Another celeb would have looked that much more potentially opportunistic without some sort of more personal connection.

That's a good point but I'm just extremely cynical when it comes to famous celebs changing to be wannabe politicians.

I get it. Since he chose to make his home in Texas and is raising his family there any changes in laws there, and there need to be many since Abbott has essentially removed all restrictions on gun ownership would in theory affect him too which makes him immune to claims of 'carpetbagging' or whatever.

This is a weirdly specific moment/niche that he fits.

People literally shitted on Meghan Markle for showing up and accused of her PR and self-gain.

Now you got an actual native and they're still complaining.

honestly I think he's full of shit on many topics and I probably wouldn't vote for him if I had the opportunity, but I think he's the perfect choice here. Uvalde is his hometown, he has personal experience with gun ownership, his mom was an elementary teacher... I don't think it could get much more personal for him, tbh.

hes quite possibly the only celeb who SHOULD be up there talking about this particular mass shooting.

I agree, and I’m not at all a fan of his moderate republican leanings. But there has to be some movement and he’s the guy to capture the attention of other moderates that may be willing to listen. it’s not at all enough, especially given the number of weapons already purchased, but he could also easily be sitting on his ass saying nothing. So I’ll give him this one, and i do appreciate him humanizing those poor people. though I’ll roll my eyes overall at what a shit show this is.

" But it could have been some other well known celeb, who hasn't publicly talked about running for office."

I'm not here for celebs who want to run for office either but y'all will never be satisfied with certain speakers.

It could've been another celeb with no political play at all and everyone will still be "ehhh hate this person, why can't it be my fave?!".

That's a bit disingenuous to akin actual concern for under-qualified celebrities in the political sphere with stanning issues. It's not like the US hasn't had enough problems stemming from celebrities in politics stemming way back to Reagan.

It's not disingenuous on this site. People try to downplay their stanning but absolutely would love it if their faves to say this instead of Matthew. Meghan Markle got a bit of criticism here for it, she's a public figure too but she doesn't have any political aspirations here.

But this is specifically about McConaughey who has been v politics-adjacent and if you're against celebs in politics won't you react differently to somebody who's not very political making a gun control statement?

(also this was in reply to gloeden's comment and say what you will about them, I never saw their unbridled stanning for a celeb, so it feels like the blanket statement was a double misfile -- maybe in other circumstances)
