The panel on The Real (Adrienne Houghton, Loni Love, Jeannie Mai, and Tamera Mowry-Housley) discuss if bookworms are a dying breed. A recent study by San Diego State University says 1/3 of high school sophomores in the United States haven’t read a book (hard copy or digital) in the last year.

My boyfriend gave me money to get the new fancy ass kindle Oasis and I traded in my kindle to get 25% off + $50 off from the trade in, and it is KILLING ME not having a kindle to read. The new one doesn’t come out until next week. I’m a book hoarder, so it’s not like I don’t have a ton of print books to read, but I find it really difficult to hold a physical book these days.

I got so used to using a kindle that when I read a physical book and set it down for awhile I'm like, "opp gotta start reading again before the book... turns off?"

Everyone's been thinking this for decades and decades as the number of people who read for dun has dropped for decades and decades. It's not that complicated. As people have more and more choices for leisure activities, the number of people who spend that time reading has dropped in the same way that fewer people are watching TV than they did decades ago.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure statistics actually show that young people are reading more fiction than older generations.

I mean, when I was in high school I literally didn't have time to read books for fun (in addition to the books we had to read for class) during the school year and that was over 14 years ago, so I don't think that's worrying.

ETA: Also I see people reading in public all the time, including physical books. We're fine!~

I love to read, but it's been ages since I've read a book because my attention span is just fucked anymore and I lose focus so quickly. :(

Same. It's so hard to put down my phone and pick up a book. A real sense of fomo hangs over me when I try.

According to neurologists, if it's because of the internet, you can get it back! I really wish I had bookmarked the article because I can't find it. But I followed their advice and it worked pretty well. You just have to put in some effort to retrain your brain. Grab something easy and enjoyable and read for a set period of time or a set number of pages. Set a consistent time, start small (don't worry if it's only a few pages), and work your way up. It took about a month and the only thing I still have a noticeable attention deficit problem with are dry academic texts, but if they interest me, it's all good.
