The panel on The Real (Adrienne Houghton, Loni Love, Jeannie Mai, and Tamera Mowry-Housley) discuss if bookworms are a dying breed. A recent study by San Diego State University says 1/3 of high school sophomores in the United States haven’t read a book (hard copy or digital) in the last year.

I mean, when I was in high school I literally didn't have time to read books for fun (in addition to the books we had to read for class) during the school year and that was over 14 years ago, so I don't think that's worrying.

ETA: Also I see people reading in public all the time, including physical books. We're fine!~

same! I thought about starting an insta page for it (just taking a pic of what people were reading. not their faces)

Same! I've actually picked up a few books just by spying on other people and then googling the book later.

That's why most statistics are BS. High school SOPHOMORES? Like, could they be any more specific to get the answer they wanted? And like you said, that is probably the time in their lives that they're the least inclined to pick up a book, whether it be a busy schedule or too much homework.

My nephew is going to be a Junior in the coming school year and he spends every summer reading. This year he's decided to study/learn Korean and can't wait to get his hands on as many books as possible. Definitely not worried.
